Edge reverts all settings after latest (?) update

I noticed this morning that some Edge settings appeared to change (grammar/editor settings) and thought maybe I was going crazy. I tried to search for something and noticed my default search engine had changed to Bing, despite me removing Bing from the list of search engines as I hate Bing.

So here's a very simple question: Why can we not choose our own personal settings on our own personal devices?

At this point I can't stand using anything Microsoft owns as they continue to destroy all of it. Every single aspect of Windows 11 is horrible and continues to get more frustrating to use. I used to use Edge as it was better than Chrome and Firefox combined, but now Edge is becoming the worst because of sneaky garbage like this.

Not that it makes a difference as this was absolutely 100% intentional without a doubt in my mind, but I noticed this on version 137.0.3296.68.

Edge's engineers are a bunch of clowns, much like the rest of Microsoft.

Already sent feedback through the Hub and through Edge's interface. There's no point in sending anything through the Feedback Hub as everything sent gets ignored. I have sent feedback hundreds of times through Feedback Hub and through Edge's feedback interface and nothing has ever even been responded to let alone addressed. Not a single bit of feedback. EVER.

Even complaining in Microsoft's forums is a complete waste of time. All Microsoft is ever willing to do is offer template responses with information that isn't helpful (or even always factually correct) instead of acknowleding the fact that they keep messing up EVERYTHING they touch--Windows is garbage, Edge is garbage, Office is garbage. Literally every "staple" Microsoft was known for has been at least damaged significantly in the last 10 years. Nobody at Microsoft wants to admit that their "advancements" are really leaps backwards.

    1. I restored my settings manually, which was a massive PITA.
    2. I already use Group Policy to manage most Edge settings, but Edge has a track record of ignoring some Group Policy settings, especially after it updates itself. (I'm guessing this is intentional as Microsoft has a history of giving users the middle finger when they express what they want if it's different from Microsoft's wishes)
    3. I intentionally do NOT sign into Edge using any Microsoft accounts as I don't want everything syncing via Microsoft.

The underlying problem here is that Microsoft is getting very bold with how far they overstep and they're completely unwilling to acknowledge their faults in any way, let alone learn from them or change their behavior. Microsoft has gotten very good at making very horrible decisions, and they don't even have the stones to step up and face it on their own public forums.

    I hate Microsoft.

    Hi _ForgettableByDesire,

Thank you for posting here in Community.

I hear you loud and clear—and honestly, your frustration is completely valid. When a browser update like Edge version 137.0.3296.68 rolls out and suddenly resets your carefully chosen settings—like grammar tools or your default search engine—it feels like your preferences are being ignored on your own device2. That’s not just annoying, it’s disruptive, especially when it feels like it was done without your consent.

You're not alone in this either. Other users have reported similar issues after this update, particularly with default settings reverting to Microsoft defaults like Bing. While updates are meant to improve performance and security, they should never come at the cost of user autonomy.

Let’s try to get you back in control. Here are some steps you can take:

    🔧 Troubleshooting & Fixes

    1. Restore Your Preferred Search Engine
      • Go to edge://settings/searchEngines
      • Re-add your preferred search engine if it’s missing.
      • Click the three dots next to it and select “Make default.”
      • Remove Bing again if it reappeared.
    2. Lock Down Settings with Group Policy (Advanced Users) If you’re comfortable with it, using Group Policy or Registry Editor can help enforce your preferences so updates don’t override them. Let me know if you want help with that.
    3. Disable Edge Sync (if enabled) Sometimes sync settings can overwrite local preferences.
      • Go to edge://settings/profiles/sync
      • Toggle off sync for settings you want to keep local.
    4. Check for Profile Corruption Occasionally, updates can cause profile glitches. Try creating a new profile and see if the issue persists.
    5. Roll Back the Update (Temporary Fix) If the update is causing too many issues, you can uninstall the latest version and reinstall a previous one manually. This is a bit of a workaround, but it can buy you time until a fix is released.

I know it’s frustrating when software you once trusted starts to feel like it’s working against you. You’re not being unreasonable—your digital space should reflect your choices, not override them.

    Best regards,
