How to fix when it cannot open any "https" link in Windows 11?

My PC is windows 11, and I cannot open any https link at all. It says, "Your PC deosn't have an app that can open this link" even though i have Chrome and Microsoft Edge. I tried and set the default app in the setting and choose both Chrome and Microsoft Edge, whatever app I choose to open "http", it automatically set to open "https" as well. When I tried to set the app to open "https" seperately, It says, " [Get an app to open this 'https' link] Your PC deosn't have an app that can open this link."

I have looked for a solution from this [microsoft] website. Some says, "It got fixed by uninstalling OneLaunch app" but I don't have such app. And I also have tried 'System repair' from Command Prompt and 're-installing Microsoft Edge' as well, but nothing worked out.

Here's my System info:

Windows 11 Home 23H2

Version 10.0.22631 Build 22631

OS Build 22631.3810

Installed on 11-‎10-‎2023

    Hi, Ventea Khawlhring

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

From your description, it seems like the issue might be caused by a problem with the mapping of default applications. Please try resetting all default app opening methods first. If that doesn’t work, try running CMD with administrator privileges and enter the following command to create a local account to see if this problem also exists under the local account: net user test /add. If there’s no problem, you can set this account as an administrator in Netplwiz and migrate the data to use this account. If you still want to use the old account, you can export this registry value from the new account and import it into the old account (right-click to export, double-click to import in the old account).

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\URLAssociations\https\UserChoice

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, **however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.**For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support to view the article.

Yes, resetting the default apps did it for me too.

Apps > Default apps > Scroll down > Reste all default apps > click Reset and ok

I have the same problem. I uninstalled Edge as Youtube stopped workling, and edge was up to date. I would normally use a variety of other browsers, but never the less.

    HTTP + HTTPS links are now broken across all applications in Windows 11. I cannot set a new Default app (Settings>Default apps>"HTTP"/"HTTPS" filetype, as even trying to set a new standard app causes the error, which is the same as described here;

"Get an app to open this link, try looking for a compatible app on MS Store"

    • I already reinstalled Edge, did not fix the issue.
    • I am already running a local account
    • I tried editing the registry keys specified; HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\URLAssociations\https\UserChoice

They are locked - I get "Error writing the value's new contents"

    • I also exported them both and tried deleting the originals.

Even that failed (I am running regedit as admin).

Seems MS is serious about us using edge. So serious they will brick Windows if we remove it.

Jokes aside, this is causing some really inconvenient problems and I'd love a tip.

    Thanks

I tried the options presented here, neither worked for me

I happened to use ccleaner and ran the registry repair, repaired all that it found and now no problem launching https

I didnot notice anything being repaired for https so I am thinking it is some other connection with in windows that needed to be repaired , there were 200+ repairs so I didnt investigate each one , just looked for anything related to url or https and found nothing
