Managing media playback issues and settings in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Multiple reports indicate that people can no longer watch Netflix 4K HDR directly in MS Edge or with the new Netflix PWA.
I investigated the issue further and found that MS Edge stopped working with at least some of the Media Foundation extensions (Dolby Vision extensions, spatial audio codecs, to name a few).
It is not the issue of my PC configuration, as an old standalone Netflix app, Apple TV+ app, Movies & TV, and Media Player work with these extensions properly to the moment.
There is no option to uninstall and reinstall MS Edge. The repair option looks for MicrosoftEdgeEnterpriseX64.msi, which is not available separately.
I tried to install the new MS Edge on top of the existing one, but it did nothing as it saw that MS Edge was already installed.
Please advise how to re-install MS Edge or how to fix the Media Foundation issue.
Thank you,

Managing media playback issues and settings in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
Locked Question. This question was migrated from the Microsoft Support Community. You can vote on whether it's helpful, but you can't add comments or replies or follow the question.
In a similar boat, also on Windows 10. (Intel CPU, AMD GPU). Just reinstalled the system a few months ago, and got all my software setup, so trying to avoid the hassle of moving to Windows 11 and doing it all again, if I can avoid it.
Was in the same boat, used the UWP app for Netflix and had proper 4K/HDR for a while. Never had used edge before so the switch to the PWA app have the exact issues. 1080p res, only, no HDR, and only avc1 codec (no HEVC, or AV1). Tried a few extensions that play with the javascript that supposedly worked with others, but no luck.
One thing I noticed is that the results of edge://gpu info screen actually vary. The Media Foundation Rendering section will give different results, seemingly randomly. Sometimes it's truncated and is missing all the info about HDCP and the codecs, and only has the two entries about DRM and direct composition. Othertimes it has the full info, and mentions that HDCP is enabled, including 4k HEVC (although never HDR. But I can't get that section to ever show if windows 10 has hdr mode turned on).
So definitely something up with the latest releases of EDGE on that version of windows. UHD and HDR on PC seems to have always had some amount of issue and drama, which is annoying.
Funnily enough I can't get 4k to pop on Chrome either. On chrome I get 1080 max, no hdr, and av1 (no hevc, and also no avc). My DRM netflix status only reports SW for some reason. So I can't even use chrome as an alternative.
Hi VictorMoroz,
Are you currently using Windows 10 22H2? If so, have you tried using Windows 11 23H2?
I encountered the same issue with a fully updated Windows 10 22H2 and Edge. All the necessary checks for Netflix 4K were checked out.

The debug information from the Netflix web player indicates "keySystem: com.microsoft.playready.recommendation.3000," which suggests it is operating on PlayReady SL3000 hardware security. However, I was still only able to get AVC encoded 1080p video with the latest Edge. Even after performing a clean installation of Windows 10 22H2, the issue persisted.
Subsequently, I performed a clean installation of Windows 11 23H2 and was pleasantly surprised to find that the same hardware could now achieve HEVC encoded 4K video. Additionally, I did not need to manually install the HEVC codec from the Microsoft Store, as it is included in Windows 11.
It appears that there is an issue with Windows 10 22H2 that prevents the Netflix web player from utilizing the HEVC codec. I hope Microsoft can collaborate with Netflix to resolve this issue.
>>Sometimes it's truncated and is missing all the info about HDCP and the codecs, and only has the two entries about DRM and direct composition.
Same here on both Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 23H2. Refresh the page and all entries show up properly.
>>Funnily enough I can't get 4k to pop on Chrome either
Before October 1st, watching Netflix on Chrome allowed for HEVC encoded streaming in 4K. However, after that, Netflix only provides AV1 encoded streaming in 1080p on Chrome, which is quite strange.
Switched to Win11 24H2 and now it works…
Hello, Andy Peng1.
Thank you for your response. I'm on Win 10 22H2.
I'm having the AMD CPU so I'm considering the Win 11, but after the 24H2 update release.
