I had my laptop frozen by webmicro LLc and had to do a check for them to release it. The check hasn't been sent as there is a mail strike on. Is this a valid situation or a scam?

Thank you for that information, that is a tech support scam, do not send them any money, if you have, cancel the payment at your bank.

    1

    Open the Settings app.

Go to Apps and Features and look for any app that was installed on the date they had access to your PC.

You are looking for the remoting app they used to access your PC, when you find it, uninstall it.

    2

Then, download the Microsoft Safety Scanner and run a full scan with that utility to ensure your PC is malware free.

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

This is most likely a tech support scam.

How was contact with webmicro LLc made, was that just a popup window in your web browser that froze up your PC?

    2

Did you make contact with webmicro LLc by phoning a number on the web page and did you give them remote access to your PC?

    Hi Dave

I got a pop up on my laptop that said it was comprimised and to phone the number on the screen and yes I phoned and granted access as it looked real. I copied all the numbers and names Iwas given. They wanted a check to unfreeze for 3, 5 year and unlimited protection. We have a mail strike on so i couldn't send the 3 year fe. Irefused to sent it by courier but they captured a photo via cam and told me to contact them as soon as I sent it registered mail with a tracking number.

    Sorry, I was offline.

Those installs you list are all legitimate installs, you are looking for some remoting software they installed so they could access your PC, like TeamViewer, AnyDesk or RemotePC.

I have a similar situation, did the stupid thing and let them into the laptop. Now they want $9,000 or else the will turn it over to a collection agent. I am going to ignore their demand.
