I have signed out of my Microsoft account in Edge and removed the profile. However, my account continues to appear with the option to "Sign in to sync data" with a single click, without the need to type in any password nor authenticator a log on. This is concerning as I had signed in to a shared computer. I had trusted Edge to remember my passwords, and now this leaves all my passwords exposed and is a major security breach.

How can I solve this without deleting my Microsoft account?

You are absolutely right. I am experiencing the same issue with my work PC. This is a critical issue that needs to be resolved ASAP. Just imagine how many people have signed off from a PC, thinking it's secure when, in fact, it's easily accessible by others and synced to their edge accounts. It's ridiculous for a company such as Microsoft.

The advice to use the Credentials Manager to remove my account/log-in resolved the issue. Thank you!

Looks like I will need to physically access shared computers I have logged into any time in the past to do that though.

Overall, this significant security issue was not apparent to me until now, and I think Microsoft Edge would need to address it at a design level.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

The issue you're facing is concerning, especially on a shared computer, as it poses a significant security risk to your personal information and saved passwords in Microsoft Edge. The fact that your account still appears with an easy "Sign in to sync data" option suggests that some aspects of your account or profile data are still cached or remembered on the system, even after signing out and removing the profile. Here's what you can do to address this without deleting your Microsoft account:

Use InPrivate Browsing in the Future

For future sessions, especially on shared computers, use InPrivate browsing in Edge. This mode doesn't save your browsing history, cookies, site data, or information you enter in forms. You can open an InPrivate window by clicking on the three dots (…) in the top-right corner of Edge and selecting “New InPrivate window.”

Clear Saved Passwords and Autofill Data

Open Edge and go to edge://settings/passwords.

Click on “Saved Passwords” and remove any saved passwords.

Go to edge://settings/addresses to remove any saved addresses or autofill data.

Clear Browsing Data and Personal Information

    Go to edge://settings/clearBrowserData.

For the "Time range," select "All time."

Check all boxes, including "Passwords" and "Autofill form data" (this ensures that all cached data and cookies are removed).

    Click “Clear now.”

Remove Your Account from Windows Credential Manager

Type “Credential Manager” in the Windows search bar and open it.

    Go to “Windows Credentials.”

Look for any credentials related to your Microsoft account or Edge, and remove them.

    Additional Measures

Sign Out Everywhere: Go to your Microsoft account online, navigate to the security section, and choose the option to sign out everywhere. This can help ensure your account isn't staying signed in on devices you've used.

Change Your Microsoft Account Password: Changing your password can help prevent unauthorized access to your account, especially if your password might have been saved or remembered on the device.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): If not already enabled, set up two-factor authentication for your Microsoft account for an added layer of security.

    Note on Shared Computers

On a shared computer, it's crucial to make sure you're fully signed out and that none of your personal information is left behind. The steps above should help ensure this, but always exercise caution and preferably use InPrivate browsing to avoid similar situations in the future.

By taking these steps, you can help secure your Microsoft account and ensure that your personal information, including passwords, is not easily accessible to others after you sign out of Edge on a shared computer.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes. : )

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

To enhance your privacy and security, especially when using Microsoft Edge at work, you want to ensure that your profile doesn’t allow easy re-entry after signing out. Here are steps you can take to prevent others from easily signing back into your Edge profile with a single click:

    Remove Your Profile from Edge

    1. Open Microsoft Edge and click on the profile icon near the top-right corner of the window.
    2. Hover over your profile and click on the three dots (…) that appear.
    3. Select "Remove" from the menu. This will remove your profile from Edge on that computer. Confirm the removal if prompted. Note that this step will delete browsing data stored on the device, such as history, cookies, and passwords, but any data synced to your Microsoft account will remain intact in the cloud.

Sign Out and Prevent Automatic Sign-In

    1. Sign out of your Microsoft account: Before removing your profile, make sure you're signed out. Click on your profile icon, then on “Sign out” or “Manage profile settings” > “Sign out”.
    2. Disable automatic sign-in: In Edge, go to  edge://settings/profiles  and look for a setting that controls automatic sign-in to your Microsoft account or profiles. If available, disable this feature to prevent Edge from automatically signing you into your profile next time.

    Use Guest Mode for Browsing

If you frequently need to use Edge on shared computers at work and are concerned about privacy, consider using Guest mode for browsing:

    • Open Edge, click the profile icon, and select “Browse as Guest”. This mode allows you to browse without saving your browsing history, cookies, and site data, or information entered in forms on the device.

    Additional Security Measures

    • Sign out of your Microsoft account when finished: Always ensure you sign out of your Microsoft account, not just your Edge profile, especially if you're on a shared or public computer.
    • Clear browsing data: Regularly clear your browsing data from Edge (go to  edge://settings/clearBrowserData ) to remove cookies, cached files, and history.
    • Use a strong password for your Microsoft account: This adds an extra layer of security, making it harder for unauthorized users to gain access. Disclaimer: Your browser automatically saves temporary internet files to help pages load faster. Clearing this cache will sometimes fix page display problems. Please back up all your personal files first, such as Favorites, to ensure you do not lose data.

By removing your profile from Edge and taking these additional steps, you can help protect your privacy and ensure that your profile isn’t easily accessible to others after signing out.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.

    Best regards
