Mouse Cursor Freezes Briefly After Closing Microsoft Edge on New Dell G16 Laptop

I recently bought a new Dell G16 7630 laptop with these specs:

  • Processor: 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900HX
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5 (2x16GB, 4800MT/s)
  • Storage: 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • Display: 16" QHD+ (2560x1600) 240Hz with NVIDIA G-SYNC
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (8GB GDDR6)
  • OS: Windows 11 Home (24H2)

Performance is excellent, and everything works fine, even under heavy workloads (I’m a data scientist processing large datasets for machine learning). However, I’ve encountered a strange and frustrating issue: the mouse cursor randomly freezes for about a second when I close Microsoft Edge or the preinstalled Windows Copilot app. All of the other applications, including the preinstalled ones, are working fine without any issues.

Here’s what I’ve observed:

  • The issue happens randomly, about 5% of the time, but only when closing Edge or Copilot. During the usage of Edge or CoPilot, everything works fine which includes playing videos.
  • After restarting Windows, the problem happens once for each app and then seems to go away temporarily, until it reoccurs after a random number of working and closing Microsoft Edge.
  • I suspected it might be a Chromium-related issue, but Google Chrome doesn’t cause this problem.

Troubleshooting I’ve Done:

  1. Reinstalled Windows 11 (both Dell’s OEM version and a retail version).
  2. Clean-installed Intel UHD and updated NVIDIA RTX 4070 drivers via Dell and NVIDIA.
  3. Ensured all drivers, Windows updates, and firmware (for my Dell Premier Rechargeable Wireless Mouse - MS7421W) are fully updated using Dell Peripheral Manager.
  4. Tested using the same Dell mouse through Bluetooth and Dongle.
  5. Tried with a random wired mouse.
  6. Tested both Edge and Copilot repeatedly after each setup.

Despite these steps, the issue persists. It’s driving me crazy because everything else works perfectly, even under high loads. If it were a hardware issue, why would all other apps—including Chrome, which uses the same Chromium engine—run without any problems?

My Question:

What could be causing this? Has anyone experienced anything similar or found a solution? I’ve been using Windows since 3.1 and have always managed to resolve issues, but this one has me stumped. Any help would be hugely appreciated!

    Same problem here with ASUS SCAR 18 i9-13980HX, 4090 laptop 16GB 256bit, 32GB 5600MHz, NVMe 6GB/s.

Since I upgraded from 23H2 (perfectly stable, NO issues at all) in December 2024 to 24H2 (disgrace edition :D) I immediately noticed those same strange mouse input freezes when Edge gets closed. I can confirm the issue started with 24H2. Feels like a sort of slow memory flush, hogging the mouse pointer (!?).

Since 24H2 is well known being full of bugs I'll just wait for new updates hoping this glitch will get fixed by itself. It's not your system, believe me, it's 24H2.

    Hi, Farrukh Nizam Arain

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

Based on your description, your hardware is undoubtedly fine and has enough performance to handle relevant operations. You've practically done everything you can (including reinstalling the system), so there aren't many troubleshooting steps left. You can try disabling hardware acceleration in Edge (as some users have reported similar issues related to hardware acceleration) and also try a different version of Edge.

Additionally, temporarily disable all OEM-provided management software and services. If possible, you can also try rolling back the drivers. If all else fails, please report the issue to the Edge developers through Alt+Shift+I in Edge, as it might be a rare compatibility issue.

    Best regards
