Stop autoplay of youtube video in new tab Microsoft Edge?

In some other browsers I can open a YouTube video in a new tab and it will not autoplay.

Setting Edge to not autoplay in settings, does not perform the same function.

I would be ok with an extension that would stop this but I think it should be built in.

Microsoft Edge | Audio and video playback | Windows 11

Still an issue Feb 2024. Particularly annoying when you right click and open a bunch of videos on new tabs, and then forget and rapidly Ctrl+Tab through them to find something you want, and all the tabs start playing at once, and it's just pure panic and confusion, and then you shut down your PC to stop it. Please, someone write an extension, of maybe the Edge team can fix this!?

Also, while we're talking about the Edge team and tabs, Firefox lets you Ctrl+Tab back and forth between 2 tabs. Super useful (see above). Edge doesn't do that. It would be really nice if it did! Thanks!

Good day realrobd, thanks for your question. I am glad to be able to provide assistance to you today. If you have already checked the setting in edge://settings/content/mediaAutoplay?search=autoplay and if it is set to Limit then the next option will be an extension and also for this you can also send a feedback to the team that is working on Edge and hopefully a fix will be applied soon on the next update and you can provide a feedback from the browser itself by clicking on the 3 dots > Help and feedback > Send feedback.

I've already gone through the steps to set it to Blocked. This does not serve the function I need.

I guess I should have been much clearer.

Go to YouTube, right click on a video and open in new tab. Switch to that tab and the video will autoplay. Setting YouTube to not autoplay will not make a difference as this is not the same function as I am looking for in Edge.

I've looked for an extension but cannot find anything.

In the end it's not a big deal, I'll just use a different browser if no solution is available.

About the tab switching: Edge lets you do that. Like with stepping through buttons or Alt + Tab, adding the Shift key to the combo cycles in reverse. (Win + Tab is naturally inconsistent because MS does not stick to its own rules).

PS: lol, I can totally imagine the chaos.

@realrobd: Seems it got fixed by now. Once I set the Media autoplay browser setting to Blocked like you did, refreshed page or opened video in new tab, the media did not start of unprompted.

@ the music guys out there: yes, it still played on when switching tabs
