I encountered this exact error code when trying to update MS Edge on a client's computer. I discovered the issue because the failing updates were not cleaning up after themselves and 70 GB of installation folders had accumulated over 4 years. Edge was working just fine (but stuck at 2020 version 83), it just would not update and could not be repaired or reinstalled.
Attempts to reinstall using the installer downloaded from Microsoft "failed due to an unspecified error".
I tried the command found elsewhere to no avail:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Here's what fixed it for me:
I noticed the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft folder and all the Edge-related folders inside were Hidden folders. I looked at my own computer and they were not Hidden. I turned off the Hidden property for the Microsoft folder (and all subfolders) and then Edge updated successfully!
And it cleaned up the old, failed-to-update version folders I had not manually deleted.
Hopefully this will help someone.
Hi dognk,
I'm Sumit, here to answer your query at the Microsoft Community.
We would be happy to help you today and are truly sorry about the experience.
The error code is not very helpful, to be honest. Please install the latest version of MS Edge using this MSI file, and let me know if it works.

I am eagerly awaiting your response and am committed to working with you until we reach a resolution.
Thank you! Unhiding the 2 Edge folders fixed my problem! Thanks again!
Hey, I tried the program you've sent, and it didn't work. it says, "Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\Software\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.". And I checked the registries, and there are no such thing as "EdgeUpdate". Please help. I did all the manuals.
