I have been through the various hints and absolutely NOTHING works. Its like it was some Gen Zs new idea and didnt think (as usual) about if others wanted it left the way it was.

So Deleting Edge is thew only solution that actually works.

So feel free to lock this thread before a actionable answer is given, that appears the course of action taken around here.

I'm having the same problem. Started 2 days ago. Did everything on your list including uninstalling last update from 5/3 and no luck (was Windows Update KB5055627). Says Edge is up to date.

Except --> there is no option in Edge Settings to "open links in a new tab". Did that get lost somehow in a recent update?

And just to clarify, I can open a new link but it doesn't save a vertical tab so you can't get back to it.

Very frustrating. Needs to be addressed asap. Thx.

try the second answer, it worked for me.

it's in BING settings not in EDGE settings, and the settings button isn't available in BING home screen.

just type anything then search, when the search results appear click on the three lines (burger icon or whatever) on top right of the screen and choose settings.

and again there is no direct way to enter settings, so you click on safe search settings which will transfer you to settings page, then and only then you will find search settings, untick both lines in RESULTS area.

    and that's it

    Hi Todd,

Thank you for using Microsoft products and making community posts.

I understands the importance of resolving this issue, Don’t worry I will be helping you with this following steps.

    Possible Fixes

    1. Check Edge Settings
      • Open Edge, go to Settings > Start, home, and new tabs.
      • Ensure "Open links in a new tab" is disabled.
    2. Modify Bing Search Settings
      • If this happens when using Bing, go to Bing SettingsSafeSearch.
      • Scroll down to Results and uncheck "Open links in a new tab".
    3. Disable Extensions
      • Some extensions may force links to open in new tabs.
      • Go to Settings > Extensions, disable them, and test again.
    4. Reset Edge
      • Open Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values.
    5. Check for Edge Updates
      • Microsoft may have released a fix, so ensure Edge is fully updated.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.
