Chrome is set as my default browser. Edge repeatedly opens links and seems to undo the defaults I have set. How do I disable Edge permanently?

I have of course changed the default browser back to Chrome (many, many times)

I have tried the "pdf viewer" solution offered in an earlier thread - no luck - several times.

I have tried a registry edit solution offered in another thread C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

No luck.

This started happening earlier this week and won't go away it's happened before but I have been able to change the default browser with ease. on thStarted and restarted. And Edge just keeps coming back.

Can anyone help please? I am on Windows 11 Home, Version 10.0. 2261

PLEASE TRY THIS IF YOU OFTEN RECEIVE LINKS VIA TEAMS

I had this issue with a user and nothing was helping. I had sent her a link in a Teams chat for testing purposes, and every time she clicked it, it would still open in Edge despite Google being the default. Finally I thought to look in TEAMS for a setting, and I FOUND IT!

3 dots in Teams > Settings > Files and links > Always open links in: DEFAULT BROWSER (instead of the standard setting of Microsoft Edge)

She later realized that nearly all links she receives are through Teams so this was the answer for her!
(Obviously, you first need to set Chrome or some other browser as your default in order for this to work)

    I hope this helps.

Sounds like some Microsoft Trickery here. This has happened to me with one of the last updates to Windows 11.

    Hello,

I'm not entirely sure why this is happening, but here some steps you could try:

    1. Disable Edge from Running in Background:
      • Open Microsoft Edge.
      • Go to Settings.
      • Under System, toggle off "Continue running background apps when Microsoft Edge is closed."
      • Restart your computer.
    2. Disable Edge Startup Tasks:
      • Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager.
      • Go to the "Startup" tab.
      • Look for any Edge-related entries and disable them by right-clicking and selecting "Disable."
    3. Reset Edge Settings:
      • Open Microsoft Edge.
      • Go to Settings by clicking on the three-dot menu at the top right corner.
      • Scroll down and click on "Reset settings" under Reset settings.
      • Click on the "Restore settings to their default values" button.
      • Restart your computer and check if the issue persists.

Try this out and let me know how it goes.

I also found solution in Outlook. Also through Files, Settings... same sequence as through Teams. Obviously won't work with New Outlook because no File menu.

Hi - could you specify the exact sequence you used please? I tried in Outlook with File>Options>Advanced> but the only alternatives it offers me for "Open Word etc Files" are Desktop or Browser. It's set to Browser, but this is using Edge. I've checked that my default Browser is still set to Chrome, but there doesn't seem to be a way of specifying this in the Outlook choices. I'm attaching a screenshot of what I see.

    Many thanks, Helen

    I'm using Outlook Version

Files==> Options ++> Advanced ==> as shown in the screenshot below. I don't know why you don't get the "Open hyperlink..." option. I've found that MS changes this to EDGE when they do updates - not nice!

I'm fairly certain I followed your instructions, but no joy. Any other suggestions, or how do I uninstall Edge? I cannot seem to find any easy way to uninstall.

    Thanks!
