Searches in Edge keep redirecting to Yahoo

I knew a lot of people have had this issue, even I've had this issue before but I don't remember how I got out of it. Whenever I try to search something using the address bar in Microsoft Edge it reroutes through two of four different websites before ending up at search.yahoo.com. uniquesearch.com, kosearch.com, myhoroscopepro.com, and or msffedge.com. I've reset my browser and computer multiple times, I've removed all the extensions I had on Edge, although it does say "Your browser is managed by your organization" which I don't have one.

This happens if I have the I have the "Search engine used in the address bar." set to Bing or Google, but not if I have it set to DuckDuckGo. I had something similar happen the other day in Chrome, likely due to an extension, where QTR search was added, sent all my searches to Yahoo, and gave Chrome an organization preventing me from removing the extension. I did manage to use an anti-virus to remove the extension and organization, however Windows Defender nor malwarebytes have found anything for this yet. I can search just fine in Bing.com & google.com, but not the address bar. Edge is in not able to be uninstalled.

It's still here even after doing a clean boot it is still here, unless I did it wrong. I'm sorry to be a bother, since so many other have solved this before and I'm sorry to waste your time.

    I fixed this problem.

    Steps:

    1. Open Edge and go to Settings->Privacy, Search and Services->Services->Address Bar and Search.
    2. There was listed options for search engines to use. Bing was the default, and all the rest had a "W" logo like I get when it redirects to Yahoo. I deleted all of the options except the Bing option.

    This solved my problem.

    Greetings Mitchell,

I'm going to be honest, what you said does not help in the slightest, it feels like it's just generic information that I could have received elsewhere. There are no extensions on Edge, I don't think it's any of the programs I have. Although searches can go through Bing if I use the windows key and search that way. It's not even a direct redirect when using Edge, it goes through two different sites before arriving at Yahoo. This is what I mean, DuckDuckGo leads just to DuckDuckGo, but using Bing will lead to redirects and ends up at Yahoo, google does the same. Again sorry to waste your time.

I found deleting the Edge profile in C:\Users<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge fixed the problem with no obvious adverse effects.

What's going on Microsoft? How can this happen? Why doesn't Defender find it?

    Hi Mitchell,

How would cookies allow the browser to be hijacked?

The OP had reset Edge settings.

Replacing the browser with another one, doesn't solve the problem.

This is a situation that shouldn't be happening, and it needs instructions on how to report the issue to the Edge team.

    Best regards

    Tim

    Hi Marco Braddock-Maximoff,

Please allow me to add some practical instructions here.

    1. Clear cache and cookies:

In Edge, you can go to Settings > Privacy, Search and Services > Clear Browsing Data. Select "Choose What to clear" here, and select "All times" for the time range.

    2. Reset Edge Settings:

After opening Edge and going into Settings, select "Reset Settings" and then restore the Settings to their default values.

Disclaimer: Your browser automatically saves temporary internet files to help pages load faster. Clearing this cache will sometimes fix page display problems. Please back up all your personal files first, such as Favorites, to ensure you do not lose data.

    3. Test whether the problem is specific to the built-in Edge browser.

Please visit the following link to download the insider version of Edge browser and install it:

Become a Microsoft Edge Insider | Microsoft Edge

The Insider Edge browser is independent of the Edge browser that comes with your computer, it can be installed and uninstalled at will, and when you sign into your Microsoft account, favorites, history and other information will be synchronized.

You can test to see if this problem occurs in the Insider Edge browser, and if it does not occur again, at least the Insider Edge browser can be used as a temporary alternative browser.

    Best Regards,

Mitchell | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
