Clicking on the desktop icon or any of the multiple msedge.exe files I have results in nothing - a slight pause of the cursor, then nothing.

I have tried too many web-suggested fixes to enumerate (virus scan, selective boot, repair, forced uninstall and reinstall, and many more), the last being to totally reinstall Windows keeping my apps etc. (did it from within windows and now have a Win_Old folder) - nothing works! I've noticed folders named AppCrash_msedge.exe..........., the latest of which contains the report below. Please help me set this straight.

Best, Anthony

    Hello Mosken,

I have done the in-place upgrade to win11 and it worked fine, BUT Edge still does not run. I had my doubts about the update even working, because when I tried to make a bootable win11 installation disk (just in case I needed it later), the installation program give me the same error twice - setup cannot complete on this computer for unknown reasons. Anyway, the in-place upgrade did work and I am now running win11, but still without Edge. I tried repairing it through the apps settings panel, but no go - it doesn't seem to do anything when I click the link or the app directly (even run as administrator).

So where does that leave me?

    Best,

    Anthony

Could you enter into the system now?

In-place upgrade the system is available for Windows 11 and Windows 10, you can follow the steps below:

    • Please rest assured that the in-place upgrade the system will theoretically not affect your data and applications (you need to choose to keep files and applications in the next steps), just update all the system files are the latest.
    • If you have important data, you may make additional backups to prevent accidental loss of your data. Also make sure there is enough free space in the system partition, at least 40GB.
    1. Download Windows 11 ISO file Visit Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com) and click "Download Now" under “Create Windows 11 Installation Media” to download MCT (Media Creation Tool). Image Then run the program, select "Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) for another PC”, and then choose Language, Version, Architecture (if you are not sure about these, choose "Use the recommended options for this PC"), then select "ISO file" in the "Select Media to Use" interface, and then a Windows ISO file will be downloaded to your disk (about 4-5GB in size, it is recommended that you choose a non-system disk).
    2. In-place upgrade the system After the download is completed, double-click the ISO file, double-click to run "setup.exe" in the open File Explorer, and select "Change how Setup downloads updates" > "Not right now", accept the terms of the agreement, and select "Keep personal files and apps", then click "Next" > "Install". Then the system will reboot a few times, and then enter the welcome screen. Disclaimer*: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides:*How to run In-place upgrade in Windows 11 - Microsoft Community

    Hello again,

I tried to reply to the email directly and got am undeliverable error. I have since performed all of the procedures that you suggested, but to no avail. To the contrary, after running wsreset.exe and for %i in (%windir%\system32\*.dll) do regsvr32.exe /s %i , I got an error on the login page "Pin unavailable" and had to look online for a hack to get back into my system. Further things are going wrong - my screen starts out blank and then the display kicks in after a while even though I upgraded the display driver, and now in the computer management menu, device management is missing. It seems the more I try and fix things the worse it gets.

SO, I think it's time for either an in-place upgrade or upgrading to Win 11, whichever you think is best. Do however remember that I have an Old_Windows folder with lots of the "old" version before I tried a reinstall.

Thanks again for the help and I hope to hear from you soon,

    Anthony

    Hello Mosken,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I am sure that I posted the windows version in my question, but here it is anyway.

    Edition  Windows 10 Pro

    Version 22H2

    Installed on         ‎01/‎02/‎2024

    OS build               19045.3930

Experience         Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19053.1000.0

To answer your comments in order:

I first encountered this problem about a week ago. I had recently deleted files (including windows system files) from  an old installation on another disk (D). I have kept windows updated throughout the entire process of troubleshooting this.

    1. I have no debugging software.
    2. I use both defender and Webroot; scanned with both and system comes up clean. I have already performed a clean boot, but will try again and let you know.
    3. I have already used SFC and chkdsk, but will again and get back to you.
    4. Nothing in the event viewer mentions Edge explicitly, but there is this recuring error with ESENT:

        <Data>Access is denied. </Data>

      </EventData>

    </Event>

I will get back to you today with the results of my repeat attempts at fixing this, but I believe that an in-place upgrade is going to be needed. I am very reluctant to do a complete reset and loose all my apps (some of which I probably couldn’t  find the serial numbers for), so I appreciate the in-place solution.

I wonder if upgrading to Win 11 would fix the problem. I have win 11 on my tablet and am not crazy about it but would go for it if necessary and were sure to fix this problem.

    Thanks again. Best regards,

    Anthony

    Hello ,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

Did this occur recently, or has it been going on for a while? If it was recent, did you have any special actions (such as installing system updates*,* hardware changes*, etc.*) before that?

The Windows error code 80000003 is typically associated with a "Breakpoint" exception. This error occurs when a program or application encounters a breakpoint that was set for debugging purposes but is not handled properly, causing the program to terminate unexpectedly. Here are some common reasons and troubleshooting steps for this error:

    1. Debugging Software: If you are not actively debugging a program, check if you have any debugging software running in the background. Sometimes, third-party debugging tools or debuggers can interfere with the normal operation of applications.
    2. Malware or Virus: Malware or viruses can also trigger this error by injecting code into running processes. Make sure your system is up-to-date with the latest antivirus definitions and perform a full system scan. So you may Perform a clean boot (microsoft.com) to see if it is normal, this is a troubleshooting step. In this mode, we can further confirmed whether it is caused by system problems or third-party software or personalized Settings. So please be patient. Disclaimer*: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.* These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get you back on track.
    3. Corrupted System Files: Corrupted or missing system files can lead to various errors, including 80000003. You can Run the following commands to fix possible corrupted system files. Run Command Prompt as an administrator ("Win" logo key + "Q", type "cmd", select "Run as administrator"), and type the following commands one by one. These commands require network support, please keep your network stable and smooth.
       sfc /scannow

       DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

       wsreset.exe

       for %i in (%windir%\\system32\\*.dll) do regsvr32.exe /s %i

    4. Event Viewer: Check the Windows Event Viewer for more detailed information about the error. It might provide additional clues about the application or component that triggered the error.

If the problem persists, you may in-place upgrade the system, please rest assured that the override system will not affect your data and applications theoretically, just update all the system files are the latest. I will give specific steps in my next reply based on your repair results.

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best Regards,

Mosken_L - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
