My spell check stopped working, how do I get it to work again?

It flags misspelled words just fine but every single time it says 'no suggestions' no matter how obvious it is on what word it should be. Even words that used to word spelled that way don't anymore. Like if I put 'thr' it's obviously supposed to be 'the' and it used to get it but now it says 'no suggestions'. It got like this after an update and even right before the update it worked perfectly fine. I tried restarting it multiple times and checking settings also multiple times, but nothing works. I'm not talking about just in word, I'm talking in general. And the spell check is something that I actually need and use a lot because I have multiple learning disabilities so it's kinda hard for me to spell most things on my own. It would mean a lot if someone could tell me how to fix this, please and thank you. <3

I had the same issues and have found a basic work around:

Settings > Languages > Writing Assistance

Change from Microsoft Editor (recommended) to Basic

I have the same issue. All the settings were already set as suggested. Still not working across my entire Windows 11 system. Words are recognized as misspelled but "no suggestions".

Sadly, it still doesn't work after trying all of them. But still thank you for the help.

    Hi Kai Knolastname,

Thank you for posting here in Community.

That sounds incredibly frustrating, especially since spell check is such an important tool for you. I totally understand how much you rely on it, and it’s really inconvenient that it stopped working after an update. But don’t worry—there are definitely some things we can try to get it back to normal.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can take:

    Check Your Language Settings

Sometimes after an update, language preferences can change. Try this:

    • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & region
    • Make sure your preferred language is set as the primary one.

    Reset Spell Check Settings

    • Open Settings > Devices > Typing
    • Scroll down to “Spelling, typing & keyboard settings”
    • Toggle Autocorrect and Highlight misspelled words off and back on.

    Check Your Default Dictionary

    • Open Settings > Privacy & security > Speech, inking & typing
    • Try turning “Getting to know you” off and then back on (this helps with predictive text and spelling).
    • If you use Microsoft Word or another app, check the Proofing settings to ensure “Check spelling as you type” is enabled.

Repair or Reinstall Spell Check Features

If it’s a system-wide issue, repairing built-in tools may help:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
    • Find the app where spell check isn’t working and click Modify or Repair.

Try a Different Keyboard or Reset It

    • Go to Settings > Devices > Typing
    • Try switching to another keyboard language, then back to your main one.
    • If needed, remove the keyboard layout and re-add it.

    Run a System File Check

To fix any system corruption after the update:

    1. Open Command Prompt (search for cmd, right-click, and choose Run as administrator)
    2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter
    3. Restart your device once the scan completes.

    Check for Additional Updates

Sometimes updates introduce bugs that get fixed later:

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update
    • Install any available updates.

    Try a Different App

If spell check works fine in another app but not where you normally use it, it could be app-specific and may need a reinstall.

If none of these work, let me know—I’ll help brainstorm other fixes! Hang in there, and hopefully, we can get this sorted for you soon

    Best regards,

    Bo
