Microsoft Edge keeps switching my default search engine to Bing. This has happened multiple times in the last year. I have even tried removing the Bing search engine altogether and it keeps adding it back.

This happens after Edge upgrades. It is nothing third party, it is Microsoft Edge changing the default. This needs to be fixed so it doesn't happen anymore. Peoples settings are being removed resulting in a poor user experience.

    Aaron,

I cannot speak for everyone else, but for me it is not possible to complete the last step that you listed in #1 of your instructions:

Find Bing search engine, click the three dots on its right side (More actions), and select “Delete”.

When I click the three dots on the right side of Bing I am given the options to "Make default" and "Edit."

As with most (or all) things Microsoft these days, users can no longer choose what they want to install, update, or delete.

Microsoft does all of that for us.

Now, users can only "disable" or "hide" all the unwanted garbage.

    Hi Aaron,

I am having the same problem since I installed the latest Windows update last week. I have gone to the privacy and search settings and I am not able to see a dropdown menu to select which search engine I use. I am not able to add Google or any other search engine when I follow the steps indicated, I open a new tab, go to the google.com website do a search but it still does not show up as an option for my default search engine. Even if I could get this to happen, the dropdown menu does not work, it is greyed out. I cannot delete bing either, the only option is edit.

Again, I was fine before the last windows update so something has changed in the past few weeks.

I am in Windows 11 safe mode so I cannot install any third party software so that is not the issue. I tried to reinstalll edge buy that did not change anything.

If you have any suggestions, it would be appreciated.

There are three things here - the search box, the address bar, and the search engine. Most people think of the search box as the search engine, and Microsoft appears to play on this confusion. In truth, the Edge browser does not allow the search box to belong to anything but Bing. To do this, it relegates the other search engines, if you chose one, to the address bar. When you complain about it here, their support talks about the address bar as if it were the search engine, hoping you won't notice. That is the source of much of the confusion.

The truth is, if you have Edge, you can't have anything but Bing in the search box. If you want another search engine in the search box, you have to find another browser.
