i recently downloaded avg antiviurs. i had removed all of my known antivirus software but it keeps coming up with a message saying that there is already another antivirus program on the computer. i am not sure where to find the old one or how to properly remove it. from what i read it might be caused by windows defender and i cant seem to get rid of that either. i have it shut off but cant seem to remove it. any thoughts or suggestions?

You can not remove Defender; it is part of the Vista Operating System.

Any of the big 3, Norton Trend, and Mcafee leave remnants behind them after you think that you have fully unistalled them.

That is the reason for your problem.

Post back with the name of the AV that you thought you had fully uninstalled.

    Hi sbneale,

Thank you for using Vista Support forum,

Like Michael said, AV such as Mcafee, Trend Micro and Norton usually leave remnants behind even you uninstall them.  Mcafee have a Removal Tool which available freely for you to download at their website.  It will help take care of your problem.

    Hope this helps,

I've tried to uninstall Norton security suite, but when I try to turn on Windows defender it says another program is protecting my computer.  How can it be when I "uninstalled" anything with Norton in the name?
