I have followed all instructions to set the toggle key so that I can be alerted whe n the cap lock is depressed. I went into

Contol Panel

Ease of access

Make the keyboard easier to use

I checked "turn on toggle keys"

I hit save and accept and rebooted my computer.

(I did not turn on the option to activate by pressing the NBR LOCK key for 5 seconds because I am workng on a laptop and do not have a number lock key)

I checked thesound volume and am able tto hear all window sounds just fine. My toggle key will not work and what is aggravating is that I just had my laptop reformatted and prior to the reformat, the toggle key worked just fine. Any help will be appreciated.

Hey justenoughtobedangerous,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forum!

Try to enable all the options, make sure that you have the ‘Turn On Toggle Keys’ enabled  an alert each time you press the CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK, or SCROLL LOCK keys. These alerts can help prevent the frustration of inadvertently pressing a key and not realizing it.

If both the options are checked, the issue could be related to the sound.

When you check these options and reboot your computer, do you see that options checked or it is unchecked?

If these options remain checked, then you can check if the System sounds are working fine.

You can check this from the Device Manager.

Open Device Manager, Expand System Devices, under that check is System Sound is listed.

Try to update the driver if there is an option.

I hope that this information helps.

Thanks.

    Hi!

I just encountered the same thing. I went into the ease of access center, manually turned off Toggle keys, clicked 'Apply', then clicked the option to turn on toggle keys when you  hold NUM Lock for 5 seconds, then clicked Apply again.

Then, I held the num lock key for 5 seconds and got a message window asking me if I wanted to turn on Toggle Keys. I said Yes, and the sound came back.  I then went back into the access center and manually clicked the checkbox to turn on toggle keys.

Don't know if it will work for you, but it worked for me.

I have Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, version 1709, build 16299.192.  This problem started for me when I first upgraded my Windows 10 system to version 1709.

Today I fixed the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling my systems built-in "High-Definition Audio Device".  The procedure was:

    1.  In Device Manager, find the audio output device on which the problem appears, and double-click it.

    2.  In the Properties dialog that appears, click the "Drivers" tab, then click "Uninstall Device".

    3.  Windows said it would have to do a restart to complete the operation, and I let it restart.

    4.  During restart, the device was automatically reinstalled, with the same driver as before, but Toggle Keys was now working properly.

I have two audio output devices; the above is for my laptop's built-in speakers; the other device is HDMI.  It was not necessary to do the above procedure for the HDMI output device; after doing it for the built-in speakers, Toggle Keys started working in HDMI as well.

Helpful hint:  My HDMI output is the HDMI output that sends high quality audio and video to a Dell W2409 monitor.   I extract the audio output by connecting the audio output of the monitor to a pair of external computer speakers.  When the HDMI output is set as the default audio device, the first two or three seconds of any sound will be muted; that will mute the Toggle Keys beep.  I've found that I can work around this by having Windows Media Player continuously repeat playing an audio file that contains only silence.

UPDATE:  Within a few hours, this fix stopped working for me.  Repeating the above procedure now makes no difference.

i HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM oops,. see what I mean? I have the same problem on an HP Envy laptop I just bought a couple weeks ago. I started downloading some minor shell type addons and MS Store apps and remembered I had Toggle keys on my IBM ThinkPad so enabled them on this machine but continued D/L'ing stuff and somehow lost them. They are turned on, and if I hold down the NUM LOCK key, nothing pops up after 5-10 seconds, only if I release the NUM LOCK key and press down again for over 5 seconds. I even flashed my BIOS to the most recent version (went from F.32 to F.56!) but still no Toggle Keys.

If it matters, my machine came with Win8 and went through all the updates before MS Store upgraded to Win8.1. I even tried uninstalling most of the programs that I added that showed up in Add/Remove SW...

Are there any known apps that conflict, including MS Store apps? Can anybody from MS provide what the Reg keys are and what they should say? I'm not a good typer and I have big fingers so I hit the CAPS LOCK often and don't realize it until a sentence or paragraph later!

    Thanks for any help.

I am having the same problem as justenoughtobedangerous.  I have a new Dell computer with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional.  'Turn On Toggle Keys' is checked, but not the suboptions to hold NumLock for 5 seconds, etc.  NO SOUND when CapsLock, NumLock or Scroll Lock are pressed.  'Turn On Toggle Keys' does not change with reboot.  I did as you suggested and no driver is available or required for the System Speaker.  My husband has identical computer, with identical problem.  Any solution?

    Thanks
