My mouse pointer is being naughty. :)

I'm using Win 7 home premium 64 bit.  When I change my mouse pointer in Personalization it changes at the time but when I shut down and restart it's back to the original pointer. I always hit apply and ok. Any way I can keep it from changing back to the original?

I tried that and it wouldn't let me add to the windows/cursor.  It said that only the administrator could do it.  I'm the only one who uses this computer so I'm not sure what to do about that.

Here is the solution, and it gonna work:

I guess you have enabled UAC (User Account Control), and this is why you can't paste it just like that but this is not a trouble.

  1. Rename your cursor so it won't replace none of these which are already there - for example rename it as: myCursor
  2. Copy and paste your cursor to: C:\Windows\Cursors
  3. Destination Folder Access Denied dialog box appears
  4. Just click Continue
  5. Right click on the desktop > Personalize > Change mouse pointers > Browse... for a your cursor located at C:\Windows\Cursors

Restart your system and you will see that you got your own cursor no longer replaced by a default.

It looks like Windows is not saving your settings. You may try to check this solution: Solution: Windows Desktop Does Not Save User Customized Settings

    1. Open regedit and check for a DWORD value "NoSaveSettings" in right-side pane under following keys:

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    • HKEY_USERS.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    • HKEY_USERS.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Program Manager\Restrictions

The DWORD value must present in any of above mentioned locations, most probably in the last one.

    2. Once you find the DWORD value, delete it and restart your system. It'll solve your problem and Windows will remember your desktop settings.

Thanks for the help.   This is the only HKEY that followed the path in the above. (and they were in the left side of the window)

       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

but when I got to Explorer this is what was on the right side pane.

         (Default)                     REG_SZ               (VALUE NOT SET)

    ForceActiveDesktopOn      REG_DWORD         0x00000000 (0)

    NoActiveDesktop              REG_DWORD         0x00000001 (1)

    NoActiveDesktopChanges  REG_DWORD        0x00000001 (1)

I also saw quite a few DWORD but they were in other folders.  Is DWORD value the #'s that I see next to DWORD?

I'm not sure what I can delete without harming my windows.
