Have Vista running on Dell Inspiron 1720. All of a sudden I can't start Windows. Startup Repair cant fix the problem and System restore can't seem to solve the problem either. Am starting to panic.

Startup Repair listed the following as the problem details but it leaves me clueless.

Problem Event Name:Startup repairV2

Problem Signature 01:  AutoFailure

Prob Sig 02:  6.0.6001.18000.6.0.6001.18000

Prob Sig 03:  6

Prob Sig 04:  786444

Prob Sig 05:  Corruptvolume

Prob Sig 06:  NoRootCause

Prob Sig 07:  0

Prob Sig 08:  2

Prob Sig 09:  WrpRepair

Prob Sig 10:  87

OS Version:  6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1

Have used Dell pre-boot checks and all physical systems seem fine so must be software. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hello Buzbyb6,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Answers Forum.

I have some questions for you to help with troubleshooting your issue.

  • When trying to boot do you get a blue screen? If so, then try to get the error code number that comes up. That will give us more insight as to what could be causing your issue.
  • Can you boot into Safe Mode? Press F8 as Vista is starting up. then select Safe Mode.

Some of the things that could cause this issue would be a corrupt file system, bad Ram, or faulty hardware.

  • If you can get into safe mode. Run CHKDSK to fix the file system. Go to a command prompt and type chkdsk /r
  • Check the RAM using Memtest from a bootable floppy or CD. www.memtest.org
  • Check the HDD for bad sectors.
  • If its just a corrupted OS, backup your data and run Recovery to restore Windows to its factory state.

Please post again and let us know if your issue is resolved or if you need further assistance.

Sincerely,

Marilyn

    Hello,

I have a similar problem on my laptop.  And I believe the problem comes from a small icon on the start bar near the clock saying "New updates are available".  The icon looks like a light blue rectangle standing horazontally with the windows flag (4 small squares in red, blue, green and yellow, with a gold wing circling the blue shape.  It updates and installs, then when the cpu is shut down / restarted the normal windows update 0/3 comes up on the sigh in screen.  When the cpu is started again windows cannot start and the system repair cannot fix the problem.

With my laptop I have 3 repair locations, of which one is an external backup of the C:

I have tried manual repairing from both repair locations on the C: that come up with > Advanced Options > Sign in as Admin > System Restore.  Both of which say they have been restored but when the reboot comes round the same thing happpens, 2 options, cannot be fixed, windows never starts.

F8 and safe mode does not work.

Windows Complete PC Restore cannot find my back up even thogh its there and this pc can detect the external backup files.

Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool reports RAM is is 100% fine.

Command Propt "chkdsk" to reveal "Windows has checked the file and system and found no problems.  Followed further down by "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50"

"chkdsk /r" reports "Cannot be run because the wolume is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked when restarted"

There is a blue screen which sometimes flashes up for less than 10ms.  I shall try to film it and get the error code if it comes up, if I do I shall report it here

    Hello again,

I have found a route around the virus/bug.  The virus acts on the system restore and windows start up and not the F8 module.  Safe mode is not available but after several tries at manually restoring the systme I had to use F8 menu and select the "Restore from a previous working point"  (around the 6-8th menu down) , there is no loading, scanning or attempts at restoring for the virus to work so the system, HAPPILY, moves the user around the start up bug and you can sign in again.
