Problem: When I try to use Windows Update or update Windows Defender to check for and install updates, I am receiving one of the following error messages:

Windows Defender error code 0x80072efd

Windows Update error code 80072efd

One Important Observation: I am not able open below two URL's in any browser while any other website is getting opened in IE.

http://update.microsoft.com

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

More Information: Vista Service Pack 2 is intalled. No other firewall is installed.

I have tried following options already

--------1--------

Solution (Vista SP 1):

  1. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
  2. Right-click “Command Prompt” Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide

confirmation.

  1. Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy" (without quotes) at the command prompt, and press Enter.
  2. Try the update again.

-------2---------

No entries exist for Windows Update and Microsoft Update in the hosts (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) file e.g.

64.4.21.125 http://update.microsoft.com

64.4.21.125 http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

--------3-----------

I have added following two lines in

Tools->Internet Options->Security tab->Trusted Sites

http://update.microsoft.com

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

---------4-----------

No other firewall is installed.

----------5------------

In Internet Explorer.

Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings->selected "Automatically detect settings"

Can anyone help me in this

Thanks in advance

BR,

Ashish

After doing all the stuff mentioned in below URL

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/836941

Finally I got the answer for this issue. As I mentioned in above thread "One Important Observation: I am not able open below two URL's in any browser while any other website is getting opened in IE."

The reason for the same was my DNS of router was got hacked which I finally managed to fix. Please go through below link.

    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Virus_and_Spyware/HijackThis/Q_24287423.html

Thanks to jd_programmer1 [see the answer given by him in above link].

Now I am able to update my windows machine.

Note: Make your router firewall enabled, router password should be strong enough so that it can not be hacked easily.

    Ashish
