Jill,

Give yourself permission to the folder and then delete.

To resolve this issue, you must turn off Simple File Sharing, and then take ownership of the folder:

    1. Turn off Simple File Sharing:

a. Click
Start , and then click My Computer .
--- ---
b. On the
Tools menu, click Folder Options , and then click the
View tab.
c. Under
Advanced Settings , click to clear the **Use simple file sharing (Recommended)**check box, and then click OK .
    2. Right-click the
folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties .
    3. Click the
Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message, if one appears.
    4. Click
Advanced , and then click the Owner tab.
    5. In the
Name list, click your user name, Administrator
if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators
group.

If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the
Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
    6. Click
OK .

You may receive the following error message, where Folder
is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of:

You do not have permission to read the contents of directory
Folder . Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
    7. Click
Yes .
    8. Click
OK , and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the
folder and the folder contents.

I'm on Windows XP Home and I cannot see the Use simple file sharingoption in the location specified.

Also, there is no security tab when I go to properties. Hence I am unable to perform the further tasks. Help!

Hi Lisa. Afraid I have a similar problem to Jill62281 but in my case the folders aren't music-related, they're copies of system-related ones left over from an old 70 GB HDD I tried to copy. I salvaged this drive from a computer that recently died and installed it as a second drive in another computer (both machines run XP sp3). All the 60GB of data is intact and accessible, but I want to copy it over to my main C: drive which has tons of room so I can replace the old one with a larger drive.

I tried to copy the contents into a new folder on my desktop but a few files yielded "access denied" errors. Then when I then tried to delete the desktop folder I got the same problem with a few of those files.

Any suggestions on how to get full access so I can copy everything off the old drive plus get rid of the desktop folder (if I use a different target location) or overwrite it?

    Hi Lisa

This got me out of a messy patch as I had ACCESS_DENIED on a 122GB drive that contained about 60GB of valuable data. Windows was not accessable on this drive and I used your method and I have now got acess to it all. WOW what a star. Regards Alan.
