Purpose of Drive C and D

Anonymous

Hello,

My new PC has a C and D drive. I understand these are 2 parts of the same hard Disk. I think the idea of the D drive is to use it for data.

However everything is on the C drive and anything I save goes into there. The D drive is still empty.

Any advice please on making use of D would be appreciated.

    Hello Hugh59,

To get other programs to use the drive you just have to select that drive when ever you save a file.

Some programs have options to specify what drive or storage you want to use.

You can have a program installed to the drive by doing a custom install when first installing new software and slecting the drive.

Please let me know if this was helpful.

Thanks for replying Zack. I have had a look at this and I have misinformed you. I was reading thread about a D drive before I posted. Here is my second attempt.

I have bought an Acer Desktop PC with a 320GB hard drive advertised. When I look at my computer the manufacturer has labelled the C Drive ACER (C:). Currently it seems to contain everything including programs I have installed and pictures and documents transferred from my old PC. It shows 82.6GB free of 139GB.

The other drive has been labelled by the manufacturer as DATA (F:) and appears to be empty showing 142 GB free of 142GB.

The computer has Windows Vista Home Premium pre-loaded. It didn't come with any discs but I used the pre-loaded utility to create a system recovery disc.

There is a D drive but it and an E drive are labelled Removable Disk (D:) and Removable Disk (E:). The only other drive is labelled BD ROM Drive (H:)

If F is a recovery drive then I will leave it alone. If as the name given suggests it is intended for data such as documents how do I get programs etc to use it instead of the C drive.

    Thanks,

    Hugh

    Hello Hugh59,

Thank you for posting.  On most computers the D: drive is system recovery storage for when you need to recover you computer to the state it was when you first bought it.  Unless you are an advanced computer user with a full copy of Windows Vista and product key (not the recovery disc that most manufacters give), I would highly recommend not doing anything to the D: drive of your PC.  You computer manufacter can give you more details on the D: drive of your PC.

Please let me know if this has been helpful for you.
