Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption. STOP: 0x0000007B__Blue screen

I've got a Vista 64 bit OS.  I attempted to do a system restore to last checkpoint to backoff a Service Pack.  The restore failed (can't remember exact error), now when I attempt to boot up Vista I'm getting a message indicating to Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption.  STOP: 0x0000007B

My questions are:

  1. Do I need the Vista recovery CD in order to get into the advanced boot options menu at this point?
  2. If I decide to upgrade to Windows 7 right now, does the STOP: 0x0000007B present a problem with that?  or could I drop in Windows 7?

Vista 64 has given me numerous problems and I think its time for it to go....thanks in advance.....Mark

    Hi Markgod5,

    Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

    It seems to be that the hard drive is corrupted so we are getting this error message to running chkdsk.

    You may start the computer in safe mode with command prompt and see if you can boot.  Then run chkdsk.

    To do this follow these steps:

    a) Restart your computer if it is powered on.

    b) Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.

    c) Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.

    d) Use the up/down arrow keys to select safe mode with command prompt.

    e) In the command prompt window, type the following command and press enter Chkdsk /R and Chkdsk /F

    Using recovery DVD, you cannot go into winRE (Windows Recovery Environment) mode to run chkdsk. You need either full version DVD (Win 7/Vista) or Vista repair disk.

    You probably won't be able to install win 7 since the problem is with the Hard disk drive and chkdsk has to be run to rectify the error.

    I am getting the same error message, however i'm unable to get to the command prompt.   At the Advanced Boot Options (F8), i've tried all the available options (Safe Mode, Enable Boot Logging, Debugging mode, Reboot etc...)  all options lead to the same blue screen with the same 'Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption' error.   So i can't run the Chkdsk /R and Chkdsk /F command.

    Any help on this is greatly apprectiated.

    Here are the steps I used to fix the same issue on my Dell XPS14:

    • Hit F2 immediately when booting up your computer to enter Setup Utility.
    • Under "Advance" tab, go to "SATA Operation".
    • Mine was set to "Intel Smart Response Technology", which I changed to "AHCI".
    • Save changes and exit utility.

    I get the same blue screen when trying to boot in safe mode with a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Vista 32-bit.  This is a friends computer that originally gave me the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME BSOD.
