What is the trick to making Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse 5000 "discoverable"?

Hi,

This might be just a little off-topic, but I've been trying to get my Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse 5000 working with Windows 7, and had a question about the mouse itself.

I know that to make it discoverable, you press and hold the button on the bottom, and the light on top is suppose to flash green and red.

In my case, when I do that, most of the time, the light on the top of the mouse will turn on/green, for several seconds, then go off.

I have to go through the power off/power on/hold button cycle several times before I can get the light to flash green/red continuously.

This is even with a fresh set of batteries...

So, I was wondering, per the subject:  Is there some 'trick' to getting the mouse to go into discoverable mode with the green/red flashing?

Thanks,

Jim

    Hi,

Just after my last post, I think I just figured out  the "super-secret handshake" :)...

    For the record:

    1. When you power the mouse on, the light on top of the mouse turns on (green).  It doesn't turn on immediately, but takes a second or so.
    2. AFTER the light turns green, THEN press and hold the button on the bottom, until the light on top begins blinking green/red, which indicates the mouse is discoverable.

I've tried the above procedure several times now, and have been able to get the mouse into discoverable mode successfully each time.

I think that what I was doing wrong before was that I was pressing the button immediately after powering the mouse on (i.e., in particular, probably before the green light came on).

I hope that this helps someone in the future!!

    Jim

My Microsoft mouse doesn't have a button on the bottom or a red/green light on top.  It only has a blue light on the bottom which comes on when the mouse is powered on.

The mouse was working properly before, then I left the laptop unplugged for a week or so, then when I powered it back on the mouse wasn't working.  I have replaced the battery and tried every combination of pushes and clicks, without success.

    Hi Satyajit,

I've seen that article previously.  Regarding making the mouse discoverable, all it says is:

    "

    1. Press and hold the Connect button on the bottom of the mouse. If your device has a battery indication light, it will blink and alternate between red and green to indicate that the device is discoverable. "

I've done that ("press and hold the connect button on the bottom of the mouse"), but I can rarely get it to go to the red-green blinking mode.  I have to try, over and over, power-off/power-on/press and hold button, until I get the blinking light.

That was the reason for my post.  Is there some kind of timing thing involved, i.e., does the button need to be pressed after 'x' seconds, or before 'y' seconds, or some other procedure?

I was hoping that someone here might know.

    Thanks,

    Jim
