I am having the exact same problem with my keyboard on the same model dell inspiron. It started a few days ago.

I tried uninstalling everything under “keyboards” in device manager, restarted, no luck.

I have run sfc /scannow, no problems found.

I then went out and purchased a simple USB keyboard, plug it in, I know the keyboard is getting power because I can see the num lock light on the keyboard, and it is listed under device manager (and vista says the device is ready to use) but nothing works.

I am currently using the on screen keyboard which is working.

The integrated keyboard appears to be functional as I can browse the BIOS and also use the F8 options (which I used to go to the Last Known Good Configuration). Also the integrated keyboards media controls light up but do not function.

My final option is do some kind of repair install of vista using the CD.

    Any thoughts?

    sarah709,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers community forum.

Try uninstalling the keyboard completely, then restart and let it find new hardware and reinstall it.

    Try system file scan:

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue

At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

    sfc /scannow

When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

    Change keyboard settings
