Can't connect to wireless/limited connectivity/local only/ipv4&6, etc.

So basically I've been having problems with my wireless for a month or two, I've had it plugged in since but it's getting inconvenient.

It stopped working a little bit after Comcast had me install something, they gave me a new modem and a disc to go with it, I don't remember what it was for, but I kept the same router.  It was fine for a day then went downhill from there, and I just plugged it in and it's worked fine, but recently I've needed to use the wireless and it's just not working.    For starters, it doesn't connect every time, just once in a while, then when it does connect, it either has limited connectivity or is identifying the connection for like 10 minutes, then if that works it'll just be local.   Then it just disconnects abruptly and I have to connect it again manually, even though it's set to do so automatically.

I checked my device manager earlier today when I started investigating and there were two drivers that weren't there before, both withyellow triangle exclamation point signs on them, they were ipv or some 3 letter thing starting with i then a . then random looking numbers and letters in brackets, for example, ipv.{943h9gh9h5gtr}

So I deleted the 2 drivers, rolled back my wireless driver to it's original state, no dice.     I then tried deleting my wireless driver and installing another, and my wireless worked for about 5 minutes and disconnected.

I've searched for and found a lot of people with similar problems, varying circumstances but basically the same exact thing that's wrong with mine.

A few helpful things:

-I have both an Xbox and another laptop that get wireless just fine, and the LAN on the computer works fine too.

-I've tried it with my LAN unplugged, it doesn't change a thing.

-I've tried manually setting my ipv4 and that's not working

-I'm 99% sure the problem is with the router, probably the drivers or network settings, or some kind of ipv problem.

-I've done ipconfigs, here's the info

-when I run ipconfig/renew, it says 'No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection while it has it's media disconnected

An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server.  request has timed out

An error occurred while releasing interface loopback pseudo-interface 1 : the system cannot find the file specified

    Hi

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

Follow the instructions below which might help you in resolving the issue.

    Method 1:

Let us try to disable the firewall and check the issue.

Re-enable the firewall after checking the issue.

Check if the issue is resolved.

    Method 2:

In order for the network to work properly, let us check to see if your network services are running correctly.

    1.    Open the Start Menu

    2.    Type services in the Start Search area and press Enter

    3.    Click on Continue in the UAC prompt

    4.    Locate Network Connections, Network List Service, Network Location Awareness, and Network Store Interface Service

    5.    Verify that Status is set to Started and Startup Type is set to Automatic

    6.    If this is not the case then right click the service and select Start to start the service

    7.    Right click the service and select Properties and change the Startup type to Automatic

    8.    Repeat as necessary for the services listed in step 4

Check if the issue is resolved.

    Method 3:

If you still have issue connecting to the network or internet follow this steps which fixes most connectivity issues.

     Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

    Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233

Check if the issue is resolved.

    Method 4:

To reset the TCP/IP stack go to this article and either click on "Fix it for me" or follow the instructions to fix it yourself:

How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

    Method 5:

    Disable the IP Helper service:

    1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
    2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
    3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
    4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
    5. Click OK to exit the dialog

    Disable IPv6:

Try uninstalling IPv6 on all interfaces, removing any IPv6 virtual adapters, and resetting the TCP/IP stack. To remove IPv6, go into the properties for each network adapter and either uncheck the box next to the protocol "Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6), that will disable it, or select it and click uninstall, which will remove it off the computer. Then go into device manager and remove any 4to6 adapters, WUN miniport adapters, or tunnel adapters.

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

322756  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/   )  How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work

    • but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

    To flush the DNS cache:

Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click cmd in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

Once at the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns

    Method 6:

Make sure that you have installed the software for the program and check if the issue is resolved.

Try using Ethernet if you have that facility in your modem and check if you are able to connect to the internet.

I'm not sure what it could be now....I just got home from my girlfriend's house along with my friends house too, wireless worked fine both places, though it was lagging pretty bad.

Now it worked for like 10 seconds here at home and it's pulling the same thing again.....and now the wired is lagging too.

EDIT:it's working a little now, but very slowly

sounds like trouble but doubt its the router with both the xbox and another laptop working tru wifi .

have you tried pinging the router with the 'not' working laptop top ?

    start/control panel/administrative tools/services   >WLAN Auto config  >  start up type automatic

change it to manual select stop then back to automatic / start / apply / okay

    start / run / ncpa.cpl  /   right click wireless icon  /   properties  / ip V4  /   properties button  / manual ip  /

    ip   192.168.1.123

    subnet  255.255.255.0

    default   192.168.1.1

    dns

    preferred  192.168.1.1

    okay

start / control panel / network sharing centre / manage wireless networks / select ur ssid  / remove  / close

start / connect to  / select your ssid  / enter your key /  connect / start automatically save / close  /

    browse ???
