How do I reset default display settings

I just purchased a Dell Studio with Windows Vista and had to reboot in order to install a program.  When the screen came back up all of my programs display so large I have to use both scroll bars to see the entire screen. I have a 17 inch moniter and the only way I can see my internet explorer is with the full screen option, even then I have to use the scroll bars.

I have gone to personalize and display settings, but cannot seem to get it back to what it looked like.

Does the black border appear all the way around the wallpaper (but not underneath the taskbar), with the image in the center?

If so, it may be that you simply need to change the way that windows displays the wallpaper.

    To do this:

    1. Right-click on the desktop and choose "Personalize" from the menu that appears.
    2. Click on "Desktop Background".
    3. Select the desired background.
    4. At the bottom of the window, right above the "ok" button, there will be several sizing options. You probably want the first one, which is  "Fit to Screen" (place your cursor over each option to see an information balloon describing it). This will stretch out your wallpaper to fill the desktop. Click on the sizing option that you desire.
    5. Click "ok" to apply the changes.

If, on the other hand, the black border appears around the wallpaper and also below the taskbar, then it is most likely a resolution or driver problem. In this case, Marilyn's suggestions above will hopefully help you resolve the problem.

    Best Wishes,

My Wife made some inadvertent changes to the Surface display and now has a weird color combination that is difficult to read.  I have spent several hours trying to figure out how to default to the original display parameters.  Can you please help me with this?

Of all the answers given, none seem to address the simple question of how to restore the original display default setting on a Surface 3 running windows 10!  Restore does not work as no restore points have been defined.

The problem is not with my icons. If I change the resolution to make my programs appear on the screen without looking stretched, my wallpaper appears with a boarder of black space around it. If I don't change the resolution, my programs appear stretched and requires either the left/right scroll bar to view the entire page or the full screen to view (my screen is 17 inches) and everything is distored. When I purchase the computer, this did not happen. I am looking for a way to reset the default settings or fix the resolution so that I don’t have the open space as if centered.

    Hi goducks1,

Im not clear if the large icon issue is your only issue....If so, you can resize your icons by doing the following:

    Resizing Desktop Icons:

    1. Right-click on your desktop
    • Select  “View”
    • Click “Large Icons”, “Medium Icons”, or “Classic Icons”. (Classic icons are the smallest size.)

If you need more assistance please feel free to repost to this thread
