My computer is not the Master Browser

Anonymous

My laptop is not the Master Browser according to the event log below.  Someone is using my wireless connection

and shouldn't be. I have 2 laptops, one which I keep wired and another which picks up a wireless connection thru

Belkin agn router.  At the moment the wireless computer is on a trip with Granddaughter.

How do I correct this, so that I have only my laptops on the network to the exclusion of all others?  And how do

I set up the network?

Currently, the wired laptop is running Windows 7 x64 and the other is running Vista 32 bit (soon to be upgraded to

Windows 7 32 bit.

Thanks for any help.

My apologies for the late update, I was called out of town for a couple of days.

This morning I fired up the router and set up WPA2 security on my computer with a passphrase and then put this

passphrase in the second computer.  I checked in Network on both computers and in each instance I saw both

computers.  I no longer have others (3) using my connection.  Master browser is now where it belongs.

I then reset the Epson Stylus NX510 wireless printer with the new connection and passphrase.  The printer

shows in the Network for and prints from both computers.

The Belkin Router CD made the job very easy.

Thanks to all for the help and information, it is really appreciated.  Lesson learned.

This is done by "election". I would recommend that you shut down the router

until you can secure it properly.

I ran the "fix it" for the Reset TCP/IP, restarted and looked in event viewer.  I found that my computer is still not the Master Browser.  I copied and saved the details in notepad, but they are much the same as I posted above.  If it would help, I could post the new details.  I noticed that the "fix it" did not apply to Windows 7, but assumed you knew that and thought that it would work.

The second computer is coming home tonite.  I will run the Belkin CD tomorrow to set up security using WPA2.  I put this task off because Granddaughter picked up internet and was using the printer wirelessly.  But apparently others were picking up signals as well and are adept enough to take over Master Browser.  Hopefully I the Belkin CD will also set up a network between the two computers.

My thanks to both of you.

First, you need to setup security on your router. Use WPA2 if possible. WEP

is not safe and can be broken easily. Obviously you have an issue with security

    from your comment below.

    Hey John\_Pa,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers.

One thing I’d like to know before proceeding further:

How is the IP address assigned on the computer? Is it Static or Dynamic?

Here are certain things which you can try out on your computer to isolate the above issue.

    1)        Change the firewall security settings to the highest level.

    2)        Reset TCP/IP

To do so, click the Microsoft Fix it provided in the knowledgebase article below or follow the instructions to fix it yourself:

How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) ****http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

    3)        Update Network Adapter drivers

Please visit the manufacturer’s website and download the latest driver for the network card. Install it by double-clicking on the source file.

For information on setting up wireless or home network, please visit the links below.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Setting-up-a-wireless-network

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Setting-up-a-home-network

Now check if the issue is resolved.

Please come back and post the result so that others may benefit from this post.

    Good day.
