Connecting to Virtual Disk Service Stalls

Installed a second internal hard drive in my computer and when I go to Disk Management to format it nothing shows up.  Not even my C: drive or my external hard drive. It just keeps saying "Connecting to virtual Disk Service...". If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Formalin6,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

    a) How you have installed the internal hard drive?

    b) Who is the manufacturer of your computer?

Please check if the hard drive shows up in device manager.

To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Type devmgmt.msc in the start search box and press enter.
    2. In device manager check if the hard drive is listed there.

Let's try this steps and check if it works.

    i. Click start->Type Services.msc  in the search bar and hit Enter

ii. Find Virtual Disk Service and make its startup type as manual. Click on recovery tab and make

Second failure > take no action

Subsequent failure > take no action.

Hope the information helps. Please post back and let us know.

Well, in my case it was the 5-in-1 card-reader that had not even a micro SD card in it, but only the adapter!  After reading this thread, I checked my DVD drive and there was nothing there.  I then saw the card adapter sticking out of the slot, removed it and voila!  Thanks  for your help everyone -- I probably wouldn't have gotten it so fast if it weren't for the previous posts :)

Make sure your disk drives are empty. As unbelievable as this is, it was the cure for me.

How do I get help on this? After a malware attack I installed a brand new SATA drive and a brand new install of Windows 7 Professional. The answer given in December 2009 does not work for me; neither does the link aanswer given - not surprising as it refers to Windows Server 2008.

I am reluctant to reinstall any software or restore files until I have this resolved.
