I want to use setup a gaming computer.  Should I go with Windows Vista 32 bit or Windows 64bit.  I heard that 32 bit is more compatible with most games.  However, some say that 64 bit will give you a better gaming experience. Is this true?

    Hello Mike,

Whether you'll get a better gaming experience with 64 bit is dependant on if the game has a 64 bit exe and some do.  You can also benefit from the increased max ram limit of the 64 bit version.  I've been playing all of my games on 64 version with no problems what so ever.  Some of the game do seem to run better on the 64 bit but I have no real hard data to back this up.  I have a large game collection that plays fine on 64 bit Vista and Windows 7 64 bit including Demon Stone which is very old (Win 2000/XP) all without having to use compatability mode.  So you should be fine with the 64 bit since video card manufacturers offer very good 64 bit drivers.

I hold to a simple philosophy: just assume everyone's a piece of ____ and then be pleasantly surprised if you find anyone who ain't.

lady-sade -  Just to clarify - You don't run a particular version of direct X in Windows, you should have them all (even if the game or graphics card are not DX 10 or 11 compatible).  Some of the newer games have DX options, but that relates to the graphics card or Windows version (DX 10 w/ Vista - 11 w/ Win7), but the older ones use whatever they were created for automatically.

If you have not updated your direct X then get the Web Installer. It will fill in some DX9 gaps that were in the Win7 DX package, and update you to June 2010. This is not likely your problem as the game is running, but it's best to have all the  d3dx.dll's.

I have found that some older games do not offer the higher resolutions on my LCD that were available with the old CRT monitor. Some games that had a 1600X1200 only have 1280X960 option . In many cases the picture looks better when using the 4:3 aspect ratio of the CRT than they do with the wide screen as well.

One way to improve the look is to use the anti-aliasing (AA), and anisotropic filtering (AF) settings in your graphic cards control panel (if the game has no options for one or both of these settings).

    Hi DatDarkOne!

You said, you successfully ran demon stone on Windows 7. What is your system setup? I also have 64 bit version of Windows 7 and the latest drivers for my video card (Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT). I can install the game, I can start the game, but I can only use low resolution modes. When I start a new game, the game crashes right after the intro video. I have installed the latest patch for demon stone, but I still have the same problem. Which version of Direct X are you using?

    Regards,

    Isabella
