Fixed based on input from Darin. I created a new thread in the correct place and now the issue is solved. I will mark this as answered so it can be closed.
Software license service won't run
- Yesterday, I ran a registry cleaner program (I know, I've always had problems after doing that and you'd think I would have learned by now) to remove the old dead entries from my registry. After it finished, I started seeing the problems that are mentioned in this thread (no control panel and software licensing service won't start). Even if I run cmd.exe as administrator, I get the following:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\system32>net start slsvc
System error 2 has occurred.
The system cannot find the file specified.
C:\Windows\system32>
I tried turning off the read-only attribute in the system32 directory and that had no effect. From what I've found on the web, it looks like I will have to reinstall Vista to make everything work. Of course, I bought this PC at BestBuy and they didn't give me the Vista install disks (thanks HP) so that is going to be difficult.
Is there anything else I can try to resolve this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.
BTW, here's the output of the diagnostic tool:

2009-03-20T18:50:04+00:00 Since it seems like changes to the registry got me into this mess, is there anything in the registry that I can change to fix the problem? For instance, this key refers to the software license service:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\slsvc
Are there changes I can make to the keys in that area that can help to resolve this problem?
