Hi Nikki 801,

Can you please attempt these steps?  Please be very cautious when editing the registry.  If you would please not delete anything just yet.  If you would please perform the following steps....If Upper and Lower Filters is not within this Registry Key, please simply exit the registry.

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start

Collapse this imageExpand this image

, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

Collapse this imageExpand this image

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

If you would please follow up with me at your earliest convenience, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Aaron Griffin

    THANKS for resonding,

The last time i think it worked was late Dec. or early Jan. The kids only use it to download music onto the computer for the Ipod or the Iphone. I do know that when i tryed to use it to down load a CD it was last month.   I dont think we upgrade to vista, laptop is vista already. laptop was a exchange from a lemon laptop that i purchase at Best Buy, but did not buy their geek squad warranty for this laptop, last year in spring.

I did read about uninstalling in device manage from this websit but was afraid too.

I did the uninstalling, then when rebooting it started installing itself as you said. but then it said,

Device Driver was not successfully installed.-

Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed.

Let's go ahead and uninstall the device from the device manager and reboot the machine - once rebooted the device will automatically reinstall so there should be no need to worry.

    To do so:

-Click the Start Orb and Right Click Computer

-Left Click Properties, this will open the System Window

-Click on Device Managerin the upper left

-Click Continue if prompted by UAC

Do you see any - (minuses) in the device manager?

-Click the + next to DVD/CD adapters

-Right Click the affected driver and click uninstall

    Reboot your machine

Upon reboot the device will reinstall - please give it a try then and let us know

    Thanks!

When was the last time that the device worked correctly?  Did it work in a previous operating system and now after upgrading to Vista it does not or did it just stop working all of a sudden?

What happens if you uninstall the device (right click uninstall) in the device manager and reboot the machine?

    -Thanks
