How do I get Windows 7 to accept the 'apple mobile device driver' instead of the 'MTP device driver'? It is driving me nuts!!

Frequent iTunes sync issues occuring.

Suggestion is that Windows is treating as a camera instead of ipod which makes sense given it asks me if I want to import pictures each time I connect the ipod.

I need to get it to update driver from MTP to Apple Mobile but cannot get it to do it as it keeps saying no compatible driver in the file.

    Hi AndyJCook-2801,

**Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forum.**Yes, you can install apple device driver on windows, try the following steps to sync iTunes.

    Verify iPhone Driver/Service Installation

iPhone requires two important pieces of software to operate properly on Windows. First, the driver must be installed; for iPhone the driver is USBAAPL.SYS. Second, Apple Mobile Device Support must be installed as a Windows Service. If these are not installed, see the Reinstall iTunes section below.

Verify that the driver is installed by connecting iPhone to the computer and following these steps:

    1. On the Start menu, click Run. (For Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the Windows Start button and click inside the Start Search field to place the cursor there.)
    2. Type devmgmt.msc and click OK. A list of devices will be displayed.
    3. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and click the small plus sign to expand this group. iPhone will be listed as either Apple iPhone or Apple Mobile Device depending on the version of the driver installed.
    4. Right-click Apple iPhone (or Apple Mobile Device) and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
    5. When the Properties window opens, select the Driver tab.
    6. Click Driver Details to view more information.

**Verify that the Apple Mobile Device Service is installed and running using the Services MMC snap-in:**1. On the Start menu, click Search.

    1. Type services.msc and click OK. You will see a list of services.
    2. View the list In alphabetical order and verify that the "Apple Mobile Device Service" status is "Started."
    3. If the status does not indicate the service is started, right-click Apple Mobile Device Service and choose Start from the shortcut menu.
    4. If the service is installed and started, right-click the service and choose Restart from the shortcut menu.

If the driver is installed and the service is installed and started, check the Event Viewer for error messages.

              A. On the Start menu, click Run. (For Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the Windows Start button  and click inside the Start Search field to place the cursor there.)

              B. Type eventvwr.msc and click OK.

Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

    Thanks & Regards,

Andy, i've just read through most of your enquiries, and, the one thing that does stand out, is,......that you're trying to use an Apple iTunes driver (a 32-bit one, presumably!)...in a 64-bit OS!

    WTH!

    You can not do this.

No matter how hard you try, no matter how much that you 'think'....that the Apple (iTunes!) drivers are 'inter-changeable', they are NOT 'interchangeable'!

    And, yes, I do have Apple's iTunes....on/in my computer. It IS a 32-bit OS.......with the Apple's iTunes 32-bit drivers!

I DO NOT have any trouble....what-so-ever, with iTunes!

Connect ANY iPad/Pod...to it, as LONG as the 'installed OS' of these DEVICES is 'WINDOWS-based', and, they WORK! Without a hinch!

    Is there 64-bit drivers AVAILABLE?

    Maybe!!!!!!!

But, you have to double-check...................with Apple 1ST!

Do not blame the Win 7 OS (Microsoft, for that matter)....for your very own stupidity!

I run a DUAL-BOOT system (on my computer!)......XP Pro, and Win 7 (both ARE 32-bit OSs!), and, the LAST thing I can ever COMPLAIN about, is.....having the WRONG drivers, or, even be trying to INSTALL them into my computer.

After nearly 30 years of doing my very own 'set-ups', building computers/repairing them, that IS one MISTAKE I never fall 'victim' to!

I work 'within the confines'.....of WHAT the OS ( or whatever Program I am INSTALLING!) can DO, not what I 'think' it should be working by (that's 'doing things MY WAY')!

I learnt a long long long time ago..........If a Program (or OS) does NOT want to work in my computer, I FIX that problem, by NEVER try re-installing that Program. Why? Because it WON'T WORK..in my computer., that I will TRY something else that WILL, hopefully!

Does this attitude of 'common-sense'....get through to you?

After 3 days of searching, I found this note ... and have dug deeper into my comp than I had intended.

I've been through all of the above, re-installed iTunes more times that I can count, been through Device Manager, deleted any plug-and-play drivers that I could find, rebooted comp after uninstalls, rebooted phone while plugged into comp (annoyingly this worked ONE TIME -- but couldn't be repeated!),

Been through all the instructions above from MS side. Been through similar instructions from Apple side.

Another fact that is annoying is that everything works smooth on work comp (Win 7 (x32) Enterprise, but not at home (Win 7 (x64) Ulitmate) --- which is where I need to use iTunes regularly.

In frustration, I did a repair of Win 7 from original disk. Still nothing works.

I need to find a way to get the installed drivers (usbaapl.sys is installed) to be recognized on my comp. It has been a frustrating week since I've not been able to connect my phone to my comp -- things were working well for the past 3 months (with the new comp).

    Hopefully you can help.

    -John
