I cannot enable Microsoft Update in Windows 7.

My Windows Update screen (from Control Panel) says "You receive updates: For Windows only."  If I click on "Get updates for other Microsoft products.  Find out more" I get sent to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp with a message that this is only available for Administrators Only (I am logged in as an Administrator).  Alternatively, if I click "Change settings" on the Windows Update screen, I get to the Change settings screen but the list of options and tick boxes is shorter than on my other Windows 7 PC and in particular there is no option to include updates to other Microsoft software.

Any help with making these options available would be much appreciated.

Running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit with Office 2007.

Many thanks,

Paul

OK, I don't know how or why, but installing Microsoft Silverlight fixed the problem.  A window appeared at the end of the installation process with a tick-box saying something like "Update Microsoft Silverlight and other Microsoft products".  I ticked the box, opened Windows Update from the Control Panel and it now says "You receive updates: For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update".

Yippee!

Cheers,

Paul

I had this same problem and figured out the way to get it.

    go to:

    update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

in Internet Explorer to enable Microsoft Update.

Note: I do not think it works in other browsers.

Doesn't necessarily work with latest versions of IE. I was getting the page that just said to check windows update in the start menu. This is with fresh install of Win 7x64 and default IE settings. I had to do this:

    1. go to the Microsoft update site mentioned in earlier posts
    2. Once on that page, press F12 to open the IE console
    3. Go to the Emulation tab on the console
    4. On the left under "Mode" find "User Agent String"
    5. Set the User Agent String to Internet Explorer 8
    6. It should refresh the page automatically

    Wow! Just wow!

Microsoft's own product update page doesn't work with the latest version of IE! That is an incredible display of corporate dysfunction!

    The Compatibility View might help.

I had the exact same issue as above - on going to the Windows Update control panel, and clicking 'change settings' in the left pane, I have only three options: Important Updates, Recommended Updates, and Who Can Install Updates. There's no option to get updates for other Microsoft products (such as Office 2007, which is installed) or to get detailed notifications when Microsoft software is available.

Windows Update informs me I receive updates for Windows only. Clicking the 'learn more' link takes me to the Windows (XP) update website which, unsurprisingly, finds no updates (once I go there in IE8 running as administrator).

I've got a clean (custom) install of Win 7 64-bit. Like Richard I was using the user account setup when I installed Windows; I tried creating a new admin account like he suggested and switching into that one but I was faced with the same settings page I had in the first account. Not sure if I missed a step in the process.

Installing Silverlight seemed to work, however (at the end of the installation there was an option to enable Microsoft Update, I checked that and clicked OK). Once I'd done that the last two options (get updates for other Microsoft products, and get detailed notifications when Microsoft software is available) appeared in the Windows Update settings.
