Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit "bootmgr is compressed"
Last night I unfortunately compressed my c: drive to save space. On reboot I get "bootmgr is compressed, press ctrl-alt-del to restart."
I have tried every fix listed on this forum and every fix I can find on the internet.
I've tried using the Windows 7 install disc in repair mode. It tells me the recovery disc doesn't match my version of Windows which makes no sense since it is the disc I installed from (albeit I've obviously done updates via Windows Update since then). So this does nothing.
I've tried browsing the hard disks via "Load Drivers" and unchecking the "compress drive to save space" on my c: drive properties. It is unchecked and seemed to take its time doing so, but on reboot - same error.
I use fixmbr, fixboot, rebuild, bcd, etc, etc, from the command prompt. It always tells me is was successful, then on reboot I get the bootmgr is compressed error again.
I've tried "expand temp bootmgr" and it tells me a file by that name already exists.
Obviously, since I can see my all my hard drive partitions and all their files via the "Find Drivers" workaround my files and install or Windows are intact. But I can't get the boot files to just boot Windows.
Very frustrated at this point.

2012-04-30T16:25:37+00:00 The solutions is very simply... remove your hard-disk and attached to other PC or laptop as an external hard-disk. When it is detected, go to my computer, right-click, untick that (stupid) option, immediately you see the message uncompressing and its done. Put your hard-disk back in to your machine its ready...

2015-03-30T01:58:52+00:00 I am having the same problem but the compact command isn't being recognized at all. Please help.
Run the compact command:
- Boot from the install CD
- Select your language, time and keyboard method
- Click on Repair your computer
- Select your operating system when the “System Recovery Options” box appears, but note down the drive’s letter (e.g. F:, G: etc.). In our example this will be C:
- Select Command Prompt
- Type the following commands, where C:\ is your Windows’ installation drive letter:
- compact /U C:\bootmgr
- compact /U C:\ntldr
- Restart your computer
The BOOTMGR error appears on all types of Windows. If you have a different Windows version, follow this Wiki article on BOOTMGR is compressed and find multiple solutions:
