Preload for Windows 7 indicated my scanner would work.  It is HP scanjet 7400c and the driver loads but there is no available software.  Where can I find software for it?

HP openly states that the 7400C is not on their list of scanners fully-supported under Win7.

I've been using VueScan for years, ever since earlier versions of HP's "Precision Scan Pro" gave me endless fits.  VueScan's GUI takes a little getting used to, but it is well-documented and fully supports just about any scanner you can name.

If the driver is installed use Windows Fax and Scan.

It still would not work.  I tried uninstalling the scanner and then restarted the computer.  Message indicated that it was successfully installed.  When I open Windows Fax and Scan and select "New Scan", the scanner initializes and then sounds like it is scanning a document.  There is no visible output but the scanner window says "Ready" even though the Windows Fax and Scan continues to say "Scanning".  I have to use Task Manager to stop it.  Since the scanner drive date shows 2006, I am inclined to believe that it is not good for windows 7.

If you have a Scanjet 7400C, as I do, the only options HP offers are 1) use the older (v8.0.0.0 dated 12/27/2006) driver or 2) buy their new scanner. With option 1 you will NOT be able to scan slides or negatives, as you could do with older operating systems, but you can scan pictures, etc. One writer suggested using VueScan (http://www.hamrick.com/) with this scanner. I have not tried this. It's about $40 for the Standard version, $80 for the Professional. Their page reports that this software scans film and, presumably, slides too. I hesitate to spend $80 for software on the chance that I can scan slides/negatives when I can buy a new scanner for not a great deal more.
