Hello there,

first of all sorry for my english, I'm Italian!

I'm a system administrator for a small-medium company. We are moving to Windows 7, because I think it's faster and realiable than XP..but we have a little problem:

All the client that are using a new Windows Seven PC , complain about the same little (but annoying) problem:

Some times (generally after reboot, but not ever) all "network shortcut" disappear from desktop without any reason.

With the word "network shortcut" I mean: link to remote folder (folder on a network file server), link to network computer, or link for my own connections  (like VPN connection to my company)

An yway only link to network resources are affected by this problem,[desktop icon,  internal link, ore file icons, are not affected by this problem]

It happened also to me (on all my 3 PC ) and I'm really surprised!

I found some forums with the same question:

example1  http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1285630.htm

example2 http://www.bdc-forum.it/showthread.php?t=91939

but anyone have not yet given an exhaustive answer

May you help me?

Best Regards,

Giorgio

thank you BossDweebe for your fast answer. Yes I mean that!

In general terms I mean "link on the desktop pointed to external resources"  like:

link to removabke USB pen

link to memory card

link to network computer

link to network shared folder [not on my PC].

My idea was that windows clean periodically broken (or not apparently working) link from the Desktop:

Probably I found the solution to solve this issue:

First click on Start Menu > then Control Panel > go to System and Security > Administrative Tools (near bottom) > Task Scheduler > Task Scheduler (Local) (upper left) > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Diagnosis >

(right pane) Right click on Scheduled > Disabled

If this is enabled then all desktop shortcuts to external drives like card readers, usb drives, CD/DVD drive and also control panel items as well will be deleted by Windows 7 when planned

Thats alot of work to get to the task scheduler. If your system is newer and you can use indexing (on by default) click "START" and type TASK and the task scheduler will populate above.

    Solved my Issue, Great post!

I am not sure form your description if you are speaking of the folder for the computer you are trying

to share with that normally shows in the 'Network'  window. (I never thought of making a shortcut for this.)

    If so read on.

It took me weeks of madness before I stumbled on it. No tutorial mentions it, and XP users are painfully unaware of it.

Try the 'refresh' button at the top of the 'network' window.

It's the green button with arrows in it.

I have found that I loose my shares with my XP machine when I disable the LAN connection, (something I have to do to keep games from trying to

auto update/connect) and the only way for the Win 7 machine to find them again is via this little button.

You may have to click it three times. Waiting for the refresh to finish between each click.

Faster and more reliable (in fractions of a second) - maybe. A pain for networking with XP for sure.
