    Thanks t.

my mistake putting .au in post, shows how tired i am. I wish it were that easy.

account was/is set up ok without the .au

am able to send at least. now to fix the receive........

    Check the Account Name under General tab of your account properties window;

    1. It must be the same as your e-mail address.
    2. It can be EITHER

*** Email address is removed for privacy ***     ( without .au )

or,*** Email address is removed for privacy ***  ( with .au but NOT .com )

    but not combination of both.

You have Account: 'mail.bigpond.com.au'.  I think that is why error message said : host  'mail.bigpond.com.au' could not be found.t-4-2 ... keep on guessing.

The connection to the server has failed, because .....

Both server names should be mail.bigpond.com   ( without .au )

**The host 'mail.bigpond.com.au' could not be found, because......**Account name  should be either : *** Email address is removed for privacy *** or *** Email address is removed for privacy *** depending on which one your Bigpond gave you. Your account name is the same as your e-mail address.

    excerpts :

Type in your BigPond email address (*** Email address is removed for privacy *** or *** Email address is removed for privacy ***), then select Next

    Show me

Step 6 of 8:  Under incoming email server, choose POP3 from the pull-down menu. Update the following:

Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, HTTP) server: mail.bigpond.com

Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: mail.bigpond.com.   Select Next

    Show me

Step 7 of 8:  Account Name field, type your BigPond email address, and your **Password (**your password is case sensitive).  Make sure the 'Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)' option is not checked and select Next

I've had same prob since installed UPDATE junk email filter for Office Outlook on 31/1/2010 even tho i only use Windows Mail.Am now able to send but not receive (in Windows Mail).i've spent many hours on this for several days and system restore

to undo all the ____.Running AVG  scans email fine tho i stopped it as per suggestion from forum,

Opened Outlook and under tools accounts, says; Selected e-mail account delivers new e-mail messages to the following

    location.    PERSONAL FOLDERS\INBOX

in data file c:\Users\Glenn\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst but they r not there!! Found my email default changed to Outlook Office after above mentioned update  in program defaults so i changed it back to Windows Mail. The other update i installed was for AVG 9 but was working fine scanning e-mail.

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.bigpond.com.au', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com.au', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

The host 'mail.bigpond.com.au' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'mail.bigpond.com.au', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com.au', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Settings and ports are correct; defaults of 110 and 25 and file associations and program defaults are all triple checked.

Haven't tried uninstallimg junk email filter yet,i've had enough atmo !!! Been building and repairing pc's for near 20 years,

normally would re-install by now but don't have vista disc.I am going to use a recovery disk  as last resort if can't fix,but it is 6months old, would appreciate any help, thanks in advance.Glenn

PS. My Office trial has expired,i'll probably uninstall it and it's mess.Wouldn't surprise me if that fixes it but problem is very

widespread, would love to find out what's happening as haven't found anything in common with others(xcept maybe 'LIVE' update. I suppose Office Outlook has lost some functionality as it has expired, maybe part of problem.

Post the entire error message, verbatim

    Error codes won't do.
