Heroes of Might and Magic II: Problems with 64bit

I am having trouble installing my old '96 game, Heroes of Might and Magic II. When I try to install the game on my Windows 7 64-bit processor, or run it at all, I get an error stating that it is incompatible with a 64-bit version of windows. I have not found any support online for such an old game. What options are available to me that would permit me to run this game on my machine?

My friend has Windows 7 but is running at 32-bit, and is capable of playing the game.

    Hi de selsby,

I am afraid the game will not work since it is incompatible with 64 bit operating systems. However, we do have one option.

You can run the game in XP mode provided your version of operating system supports the installation of XP mode.

Windows XP Mode comes as a separate download and works only with Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise.

    Windows XP Modehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/windows-xp-mode

Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

    Using Windows XP Mode

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/videos/using-windows-xp-mode

You could also try Microsoft Virtual PC

Virtual PC 2007: Run multiple operating systems without multibooting

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Virtual-PC-2007-Run-multiple-operating-systems-without-multibooting

Try installling XP mode or Virtual PC and then try to play the gae in Virtual PC or XP mode. You can install XP mode only if you have windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate.

Hope this information is helpful, please let us know if you require further help.

    Solution Found..

Get a copy of Wing32 copy it to

                                                        "C:\Windows\System32"

                                                       "C:\windows\sysWOW64"

Copy HEROES2 Folder from the root of the CD Drive to wherever you like and rename it to something like

"Heroes of Might and Magic II" run the game and it works! well it did for me but with midi sound.

    Hey!

Thank you soo much for this simple steps!

I was so frustrated not beeing able to play this fantastic game that i almost bought it at GOG (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/heroes_of_might_and_magic_2_gold_edition),

but copying the whole folder worked great!

First it said that it missed the wing-file. I found it in the CD folder and copied it into the folders  System32 and SysWOW64 on my computer, as Winnerburger stated!

Worked for my son too.  Created the games folder on C drive, copied the contents of the whole disk over.  We needed to copy the wing32.dll file (found in the WING folder on the disk) into the System32 folder and the sysWOW64 folder also, and we set compatibility to win 98/ME.  Seems to be working fine, except it couldn't play the cd music properly? or something like that.  It's playing midi music instead, but that just adds to the nostalgia of it IMHO :)

This doesn't work. I get an error and the game closes right away.
