Recently I upgraded to Windows 7 and since my computer will not respond to me hitting "Fn f7" anymore, is there a driver or something I need to download so that I can connect my Sony VAIO to my LCD tv again? I do not have an HDMI port, my model type is VGN-CR590.

Hi rmc45,

When your computer does not display anything on the monitor you have a No Display or Blank Display problem. This can be caused by any of the following reasons:

• Monitor or System has no Power

• Monitor is defective

• Loose VGA/DVI Cable Connection

• Video Card Problem

• AGP/PCI-e Connector Problem / Motherboard

• System RAM Problem

To change the display settings, you may go through these steps.

  1. Open the "display settings" in your computer and activate Output to the TV screen. You can either mirror content of your computer on the TV or extend the display just like a dual monitor screen.
  2. Pick up your TV remote and switch to "External Inputs" from the menu. You will need to change the default "Video 1" to a different selection which may be "HDMI 1" or "Video 2" depending on how you have made the connection.

Important: Make sure you connect the cable to the TV before turning on the computer as sometimes it may fail to recognize external display.

You may also need to change the screen resolution of your TV using the Display settings in your Control Panel else the picture may appear distorted.

To update the Display driver visit the following link and select (Automatically detect and update drivers and software) in the left pane.

If this does not help, visit this support link of Sony and update the Display drivers.

Note : In the support link for Sony you will find only the drivers available for Vista Operating system.

You may download these drivers and install it in Compatibility mode by following this step:

1.  Locate the executable file(.exe file) for the driver installation program.

2.  Right-click the file, and then click **Properties.**3.  In the PackageName Properties dialog box, click the Compatibility tab.

4.  Click to select the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box, click Windows Vista in the Run this program in compatibility mode for list, and then click OK.

5.  Double-click the executable file to start the installation program.

Hi Divya, thanks for the support but my problem is little bit more complicated i guess.

I used to connect my laptop to my TV with VGA cable on Vista by using "output to" command. But after I upgraded to windows 7 it asked me to change the screen resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x800. The new resolution works perfectly on my laptop but I knew my HDTV can not support 1280x800 pixels so I changed back and connected my laptop to my TV using same VGA cable.

First of all, there's no "output to" option on desktop with right click. Which I used to use it all the time.  Anyway, now I can only see my computer on my TV when I "duplicate these  displays".

I receive UNSUPPORTED SIGNAL message on my TV when I try to "show desktop  only on 2 (my TV)" option.

Why I can duplicate display but I can't see it on my TV only? It creates such poor results and slows down my laptop. Because it tries to show video on both devices at the same time.

    Is there a solution?

    Thank you very much.

    Chuck
