Windows 7 64-bit cannot connect to a printer on a Windows 7 32-bit

I have a desktop with Win7 Ultimate 32-bit and a labtop with Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit. HP laserjet 1320 connected to the desktop via USB, I tried to share it with the labtop through the network and HomeGroup, the labtop can see the printer but cannot connect. When I try to install it I get the message "windows cannot find a driver on the network". I downloaded the 64-bit driver to the labtop and tried to locate it manually but the computer wouldn't accept it. I can't install the 64-bit driver to the desktop.

Hi doc1988,

First, you need to know the name of the computer which hosts the printer, and the name of the printer to be shared.

Sitting at the host computer: The procedure is the same for Windows 7 32bit

Start > Computer > Properties > Computer Name tab > Change button. Write down the name that you see here because this is the computer name.

Start > in the search box enter"devices and printers" > Printers and Faxes > Right click on the printer to be shared > Properties > Sharing tab. Write down the name that you see here because this is the printer name.

OK. Now sit in front of the Windows 7 64bit computer:

Start > Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add printer > Add a local printer > Click on ‘Create a new port’ > ‘Local Port’ > ‘Next’.

The port name will look like this: \Computer name\printer name

So enter the names already retrieved, ensuring that you use the same format, then click ‘OK’.

At this point, you will be presented with the ‘Add New Hardware’ process. You can either select the make and model of your printer from the lists or insert your printer installation disk if you can’t find yours. The printer will be added, and you should be able to print a test page.

You selected the wrong print driver.   The HP LaserJet 1320 PCL 5 driver from windows update does not support PCL XL.  Sending the printer data it is not programed to interpret results in the error page.

    Thank you Azeez

I followed the steps in this thread http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistahardware/thread/e5ecc93d-fd91-403c-93a0-c3792b29965b (very similar to your answer). I found that the printer name shouldn't contain any spaces.

The printer is now connected but when I print any document I get a page out of the printer with this message printed

    PCL XL error

               Subsystem: KERNEL

               Error:         UnsupportedProtocol

               Operator:    0x0

               Position:      0

    Can you help?
