Hey lesnbran,

Which version of operating system is being installed on your Gateway computer?

Is it a wired or a wireless network?

This error can occur when trying to print from a Windows Vista–based computer or Windows 7-based computer to a computer running Windows XP.

First, make sure that the Windows XP computer is properly connected to the home network and set to share printers. For more instructions on printer sharing in Windows XP, go to the XP: Sharing printers"" href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=117947">Sharing printers

topic on the Microsoft website.

If the other computers on your network can "see" the Windows XP computer and its attached printer, can share files with that computer, but still encounter an "Access is Denied" error when trying to print, try the following workaround:

1.    Open Printers by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Printers.

2.    Click Add a printer.

3.    In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a local printer.

4.    Click Create a new port. Make sure Local Port is selected in the list, and then click Next.

5.    In the Port Name dialog box, type \computer name\printer name, and then click OK.

6.    Complete the rest of the wizard, and then click Finish.

Notes

·         "Computer name" is the name of your shared Windows XP computer. You can find your computer name by right-clicking My Computer, and then clicking Properties. You'll find the name under the Computer Name tab.

·         "Printer name" is the name of the Windows XP-attached printer you're trying to print to. To find the printer name in Windows XP, click the Start button, click Printers and Faxes, right-click the shared printer, and then click Properties.

Note: Though this article says it is for Vista, it holds good for Windows 7 as well.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, Service Pack 1.  It has been working fine with two HP printers, an HP 1020 laser and an HP Photosmart Premium 410.  Everything worked fine.  Tried to print a document the other day, a pdf I believe, and it wouldn't print.  Here are the symptoms/attempts:

    1. When I boot up, both of these printers show up in the Printers and Faxes section of the devices & Printers display.  The HP 1020 shows as the default printer, as it has been for ages.
    2. I try to print a document...from Excel or Word or IE...try to print anything, and its as if you dont even execute a command....File....Print.... NOTHING.  No error message, no prompt to select printer...ZIP.
    3. When you go back to the Devices and Printers screen, The HP 410 has vanished and the HP LaserJet 1020 is now in an "Unspecified" category.  There are NO printers showing in this screen whatsoever...just 4 Devices (monitor, USB Keyboard, the computer itself, and a USB optical mouse) and the single HP 1020 in the Unspecified category. Thats it.
    4. In this screen I select Add a Printer,  and get this error message: "Windows can't open Add Printer. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine."
    5. Go into Windows Task Mgr, the Services tab, and Print Spooler says STOPPED.  I try to start it and get error msg: "The operation could not be completed.  Access is denied."  I am logged in as an administrator when this happens, there is no other administrator.

6)Restarting the machine starts you over, same stuff as above.

    1. If I turn off the HP 1020, it disappears from the Unspecified devices list and then when I power the printer back up, it reappears, still as unspecified device.  Nothing has changed.
    2. I tried the usual troubleshooting, Zip.  Tried some download FixIt app from MS site, no help.

Hope somebody has some ideas. All patches and updates have been done on this computer. One print job was working absolutely fine, the next one, seconds later, hung up and I've not been able to print since. No new software installed, nothing. Prints fine...stops printing. Thats how it happened.
