Video Hardware Error

Anonymous

I've had my sony vgn-nw for about 7 months now and this is the first time this has ever happened.  I was watching an old episode of the office and suddenly got a blue screen.

-  I've seen this episode before from start to finish, using the same media player

-  When I restarted, I went to watch the same part of the episode where it crashed, and the blue screen didnt come back

This one incident has got me worried though.  Is this something I should now be expecting to happen again?  And if so, can it be fixed by restoring my windows version to a previous version or by reformatting.

When the laptop restarted, it showed the error message, but i clicked check later.  I'm using Windows 7 and this is the oly info I can find on the crash.

    Hi umrobakm,

    a. What error messages did you get when you restarted your laptop?

    b. Do you get such blue screen errors only while watching some videos?

Post back the exact error messages so that we can assist you better.

Such blue screen error messages may be because of

    • bad/corrupted device driver

    • RAM issues

Run Memory Diagnostics Tool manually and check if this helps.

It Scans your computer's memory for errors.

To run the Memory Diagnostics Tool manually

If the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool doesn't run automatically, you can run it manually.

    1. Open Memory Diagnostics Tool by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type Memory, and then click Diagnose your computer's memory problems. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. Choose when to run the tool.

    For more information see: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer

If the same issue persists then you may try uninstalling and reinstalling video card drivers.

Steps to uninstall and reinstall the video card driver:

    1.    Click on start button.

    2.    In the search box type devmgmt.msc and then press enter.

    3.    Select the video card device and right click on it

    4.    Now select properties.

    5.    In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.

    6.    After the uninstalling the drivers restart the computer.

This should automatically install proper drivers for it.

You may also download and install the latest driver for it from manufacturer’s website.

    For more information visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly

Also run an online malware/virus scan on the computer.

    Hello,

I had the same problem about a  few months ago but the computer is working fine right now.

The issues weren't resolved, and I wasn't able to send the info report to Microsoft.

Actually I have 17 issues of the same type. Here is some info about my computer.

    Make: Toshiba

    Model: Qosmio X775 3D

VCard: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M 3D

    RAM: 8.00GB

    HDD: 1.5TB SATA

I changed the OS from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Is there any possibility that the OS is making trouble for the VCard?

By the way, I'm going to do the Memory Diagnosis thing to check if there's any problem with my RAM.
