i've had this problem a few times over the last 18 months with my system.

i start up my pc and the resolution is at 1024 x 720, instead of 1280 x something (or bigger, can't remember), now it won't even give me the option of choosing anything over 1280 x 768.

i'm running W7 with a fujitsu 22inch lcd, msi n260 oc graphics.

the last 2 times this happened i blew my graphics card :(

please help me..!

Scott.

I have this same problem except that I've never blown a video card. My drivers are up to date and I have the NVidia Control Panel too. Everything was working fine. I got up this morning and turned on the computer and it's on 1024x768. Windows doesn't show anything but that and 800x600. NVidia Control Panel shows all the way up to 1080p (we're using an HDTV) but when I choose it and hit apply it flickers and turns to 1024x768 (which is no change of course). I'd really like to know what's going on, especially if it could blow my video card! Everything has been working properly on this computer for a very long time and I didn't change anything between when it was working and this morning. The webpage I'd been looking at when I walked away was even still up.

You need to get the correct graphics drivers for the monitor to be correctly recognized.  www.nvidia.com.  If you've 'blown up' a previous card, I'd suspect an overheating issue, be sure you have enough cooling in your tower and check your PSU to make sure it's giving the correct power to the graphics card.

    Hi Scott,

In addition to Cari’s advice you may also reduce the video/Hardware acceleration and check.

Try reducing video hardware acceleration by doing the following.

    1. Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.
    2. Click Advanced Settings, click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings.

Note that some video card drivers do not permit you to change settings.

    1. Move the Hardware acceleration slider toward None to reduce or turn off video hardware acceleration.

Note If the display works fine with video acceleration turned down, it may indicate that you have to update your video driver or it may indicate that your display adapter cannot run at full acceleration.

Cari, as it turns out windows just released new drivers today, but still nothing, i had also thought cooling had been a problem, so i bought a new case and uber good fans.

where do i go to check power distribution? :S

Diana, i tried following your instructions but my device doesn't allow for the settings to be changed, so it seems i'm still at square 1, although i have a fancy new nvidia control panel :P
