Icon changing? can you personalise desktop icons?

Hi, newbie here, and not brilliant with computers, so please be gentle!

I wanted to change the icon pictures on my desktop to something more personal, to make the theme stretch all over my computer, does anyone know if it's possible to do this? I'm not looking to change the program icons (though I wish I could) but I am hoping to be able to change the picture on my file icons.

Thanks in advance for anyone who understands this and can help!
