I'm connected directly to the internet with DSL.  Did a system restore and lost my internet.  When I first got the computer it connected with the internet no problem.  Now nothing I try works.  I'm so frustrated...any ideas?  It can't find any networks and won't let me set up a broadband access.

Help!!!      I did try to undo restore and , of course, windows could not do it because of a missing file

Hi TopHatter,

·         Are you trying to connect to Wired or wireless network?

·         Any recent changes made to the computer prior to the issue occurred?

First, make sure that the proxy settings for Internet explorer are not enabled. Follow the steps to check this.

1.      Launch Internet Explorer.

2.      Click Tools and click Internet Options.

3.      Click on Connections Tab and click on LAN Settings.

4.      Make sure that below Proxy Server none of the options are checked. If anything is checked, please clear the box.

I suggest that you check if you are able to connect to internet hardwired to the router.

If your computer is having problems connecting to the Internet, or to other computers on a network, try using one of the networking troubleshooters to fix the problem.

Open the Network troubleshooter by right-clicking the network icon in the notification area, and then clicking Troubleshoot problems

Open the Internet Connections troubleshooter by clicking the Start, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Network and Internet, click Connect to the Internet.

Follow the steps from the link below which might help you to fix the issue: Open networking troubleshooters: **http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-networking-troubleshooters**

Using the Network troubleshooter in Windows 7: **http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Using-the-Network-troubleshooter-in-Windows-7**

If you are unable to connect to your wireless network then follow the steps from the link below:

This is the problem I am having too.  When I try to uncheck the proxy server box, it isn't highlighted and it won't let me uncheck it.

    Thank you, Swathi B!!

My Father just called (everyone seems to call me w/ their computer problems!) and said he had a missing proxy server error message. I very quickly came across your resolution and by unchecking one box in the Proxy Server options, he was back in business.

Just changed over to windows 8.1 and very frustrated with same problem - finally found answer on an answers.microsoft.com site (won't let me copy and paste) written by B-Hornchen und A-Hornchen:

disable the use of a proxy server or automatic proxy script in internet

    options/connections/your connection.

It took me a little while to find "internet options" to start with so here's my little longer version since I'm not that computer literate:

Go to tools on toolbar (above same screen that gave the error message on my IE explorer)

    internet options

    connections

    LAN settings

uncheck "Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections)."

    Worked perfect after that.
