Code 43 when USB device not recognised (Lexmark P915) on Windows 7 64-bit version

I am attempting to get a Lexmark P915 printer to connect to an Acer Aspire 7736 notebook running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium.

According to the Microsoft and Lexmark websites the Printer P915 is listed as having drivers available for download from lexmark.com and showing that Windows Vista drivers are compatible with Windows 7.

Having then downloaded and run cjsP910EN.exe to install the driver for Microsoft Vista (x64) and followed all of the instructions I am unable to load the driver due to a "USB Device not recognized" error (Code 43). Having deleted all lexmark drivers and deleted all USB drivers on reboot Windows 7 reinstalls the USB drivers and indicates that the USB drivers are up to date (Driver version: 6.1.7600.16385). When I execute the setup application for the Lexmark p910 series printers I get as far as the following screens:

Install Software

Uninstall Previous Driver

License Agreement

Firewall Exceptions

Connect Your Printer

I cannot proceed past connect the "Connect Your Printer" screen because every time I connect the USB cable and have the "With a USB cable" radio button enabled the "Continue" button never gets enabled. I have tried other USB cables and the problem persists with all cables. It appears that Windows 7 does not detect Plug and Play on the Lexmark P915. I have connected an Epson AcuLaser C1900, a Wheel Mouse, a Bluetooth Wireless Mouse receiver, and a 4 port USB Hub to the Acer Aspire 7736 and have had no problems with any of those USB devices.

With the Lexmark P915 printer connected to any USB port it shows as "Unknown Device" with a yellow exclamation mark under the" Universal Serial Bus controllers" within Device Manager.

The Acer Aspire 7736 has Intel ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controllers and Intel ICH9 Family USB Enhanced Host Controllers.

I have followed Mark's instructions for creating a USB Trace as detailed in another post (error code 43 when USB not recognised). The USB Trace file is at <iframe title ="Preview" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" style="width:98px;height:115px;padding:0;background-color:#fcfcfc;" src="http://cid-7752c6375603b49a.skydrive.live.com/embedicon.aspx/.Public/USBForumTrace.etl"></iframe>

and the c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log file is at <iframe title ="Preview" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" style="width:98px;height:115px;padding:0;background-color:#fcfcfc;" src="http://cid-7752c6375603b49a.skydrive.live.com/embedicon.aspx/.Public/setupapi.dev.log"></iframe>

Can anyone help?

    Hi Chris,

After a lengthy call to Lexmark, they played the "Out of Warranty" card and suggested I contact the notebook manufacturer. I have invested enough time in trying to fix this problem and have now ordered a replacement printer built by another manufacturer.

    Thanks for your help,

    Microlex

Yes, it does appear to be a hardware issue with the printer. You might try contacting Lexmark support and see if they have any ideas though.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Following your idea I have just tried to connect the Lexmark P915 to a Dell Inspiron notebook running Windows XP Pro SP3 and it failed with the same error messge (USB Device not recognised). Device Manager shows USB\VID_0000&PID_0000 so I assume that the printer USB connection is the culprit and buying a new printer is the probable solution!

    Thanks,

    Microlex.

    Hi Microlex,

I took a look at the setupapi.dev.log and the hardware ID for the Lexmark is coming back as USB\VID_0000&PID_0000. Have you tried connecting the printer to another computer to see if it is recognized properly? I do see the successful install for your Epson AL-C1900, so the cable and USB port on the computer look fine.

    Thanks,

    Chris
