Windows 7: Backup and Restore (Error Code: 0x81000019)

Hi. I'm using a cloned desktop system with Windows 7 Professional Edition installed. I tried using Windows 7 built-in Backup and Restore function to create backup (on internal drives) but all my trials have failed. The error message is as shown below:

Check your backupA shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP"application event logs for more information.Details: Insufficient storage available to create either shadow copystorage file or other shadow copy data.Error Code: 0x81000019

System: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz, 4Gb DDR2 RAM, Gigabyte Motherboard, 1Tb Hard Disk Drive (with ample free disk space).

Notes:

I've tried many suggestions from online forums, such as:

  • putting SPP and Volume Shadow Copy to automatic, and then starting the services.
  • cleaning the Hard Disk Drive (removing previous restore points).
  • changing the drives to NTFS.

Nothing helped.

I hope someone could provide me with a workable solution.

Have a great day ...

    Hi,

    a. Are you trying to backup to the external hard drive or the internal drive?

    b. Were you able to use windows backup feature without any issue earlier?

    c. Do you have any third-party backup utility installed on your computer?

Try the below methods one by one and check if this helps.

    Method 1:

    1. Click on start button, type diskmgmt.msc and press enter.
    2. Now right-click on C: partition and select Mark partition as active (By default C: drive has windows installed on it. If you have installed windows 7 on any other driver then, select that partition).
    3. Close Disk management.

Method 2: Check if the issue persists in clean boot state.

Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. If yes, you may go ahead and disable or uninstall the

    same.

Follow the below steps to put your computer in clean boot state:

    1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
    2. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
    4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
    5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

The above steps would put the computer in clean boot state.

Refer the link below for more details on how to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7:

After you’ve finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

    1. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    2. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
    3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

You may also temporarily disable security software’s and check if the issue persists. Make sure to enable those security software's on the computer after checking.

I have the same issue. I am running Windows 10 Home on Dell XPS12-9Q33, laptop Intel Core i7-4500U CPU @ 1.8GHZ with 8GB RAM 64-bit OS, x64-based processor and am using an external Western Digital HD USB 3.0, compatible with USB 2.0, 1TB.

Yes the backup has run successfully before.

I'm having same trouble.  I believe this is a Microsoft problem.  I've tried every fix under the sun and even went through online chat with a tech from Microsoft who could not figure it out.  I don't know that i"M willing to fork out $149 for them to elevate this to the higher ups because I think something they did at Microsoft caused the problem.

I solved the very same problem by installing a partition manager (Easeus's Free one) and enlarging the standard 100 MB hidden boot partition to 300 MB (any value under 500 MB will do). That was accomplished by shrinking the C partition with 200 MB, moving it up over the unallocated space created on the right (in a linear representation of partitions starting with the hidden one to the left). Then the unalocated space "moved" to the left so I could expand the hidden boot partition.

It appears that Shadow Copy cannot work properly if available space on any drive is less than 40%.
