Error 1325 Documents is not a valid short file name

I keep getting an error code of "error 1325 documents is not a valid short file name" whenever I try to add an update to a previous program that I have installed.  I have tried to download the "clean up utility" from Microsoft, but I get the same message.  I did not have Office XP or 2002 on this computer, I have always had 2007.  This is really making my computer use frustrating.  What can I do?

Just got the same thing with trying to run, remove or repair Acrobat Reader 9.3.2

gets: Error 1325, Favorites is not a valid short file name.

Fixed it in the registry by changing it to a short name, Favorites="P:\Favorites"

    The registry was:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]

    "Favorites"="\\Server1\users$\User1\Favorites"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]

    "Favorites"="\\Server1\users$\User1\Favorites"

I have no idea what that window in your screenshot is, it is not something I see on my machine, what are you right-clicking on to bring up that Properties page?

See if I can explain this a bit better?

Type Libraries in the Start Menu Search box.  Open the folder called "Libraries" from the list in the Start Menu after the search completes, and right-click on the sub-folder "Documents (Library)" , try the Restore Defaults button (make a note of the Library locations first).

Don't ignore the fact that user profiles do sometimes get corrupted that is why we test with other newly created users.  Creating users and then deleting them is easy enough.

These are just for information in case it turns out that other users do not have your current user's problem.

Did you run ChkDsk as that will also check for file error problems?

Mine does not say Libraries, but General and there is no place to click to restore it to a default location.

Upon trying to figure all of this out yesterday, I tried to remove some programs that I don't use anymore from the "programs and features" area in the control panel.  When I tried to remove spiralfrog (a defunk music service), I got the same error, but I did not get it when I removed other programs from my list.  I removed the files in the program files and tried to remove it again and still got the same message.  I downloaded "Hijactthis" from Trend's site, ran the scan, got the report but spiralfrog does not appear in my registry.  Thus, I can't remove it from there either.  I have a feeling this program is actually what is causing my problem.

Thanks for you help guys, I really do appreciate it.

    Marilyn,

When I tried to go into the start menu and reset the default location for the documents and right click with the cursor over the documents name, I get the following actions, "copy, rename, properties".  I went into properties, but there is no place in there to reset the default to the target location.

Also on the restore point, I feel this has been acting up longer than what it gives me to select the point and I am not really sure when it was that it started acting up, I just got frustrated with the computer doing this all of the time.

    Hi Truefriend,

What is the update that you’re trying to add to your previous program and what program is it?

I would suggest you to try performing the steps mentioned in the link below.

The first step is to try using System File Checker Tool. If this did not fix the problem, then try performing a system restore to the date when you were not getting this error message.

How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212

If the above steps fail to fix the issue, then try the following.

Let us try the steps mentioned below which involves system registry modification.

Note: Modifying REGISTRY settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of REGISTRY settings can be solved. Modifications of these settings are at your own risk. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

    1. Open the Start menu.
    2. In the white line (Start Search ) area, type regedit and press Enter.
    3. In regedit, go to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

NOTE: You can see the default paths for the user folders under the Data column.

    1. In the right pane, check to see if the missing personal user folder (under Name column) has the default %USERPROFILE% location (under Data column) for it.

Note: The default location should be your C:drive.

    1. In the right pane, right click on the personal user folder that is missing and click on Modify.
    2. Type in the default location of the missing personal user folder, then click on OK.

    NOTE: For example, %USERPROFILE%\Pictures.

    1. Close regedit.
    2. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to restore the folder.

NOTE : Sometimes you may need to restart more than once for the changes to be applied.

Now try to add the update to your program and check if you’re able to resolve the issue.
