Error 1706: My Windows Installer runs at every startup. Installer cannot find SFR.msi after cancelling I get ERROR 1706.

Hi

I Have been getting this Windows Installer Error 1706 message everytime I start up windows.  It relates to my Sidebar (which I have disabled to temporarily stop this installer program)

This may have to do with a gadget I removed, uninstalled.

I get this message before I cancel....  "The Feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable"  Then after cancelling I get the Error 1706 No valid source could be found for product SFR. The windows installer cannot continue.

I would like to stop the windows installer program from running, and trying to uninstal or install a program that does not exist.

Any help would be apprecriated.  I have looked around but most people seem to be going in circles once they get this message.

Thank you, Richard

    Hi Richard,

    A) This can happen when related components still exist even if a program is uninstalled. To completely remove the software or a program, you may use the Windows Clean up utility tool.

    1. Visit the following link to download the Clean up utility: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
    2. Save the file to the computer.
    3. Install this tool on the computer.
    4. Click Start -> (All) Programs -> Windows Installer Clean Up.
    5. See if you can find any components related to the program which you have uninstalled. If so, remove them.
    6. Restart the computer.

    B) If the above does not work, then perform a clean boot. In Clean Boot, windows use a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that software conflict is eliminated. To put the computer in clean boot state follow the steps in the article “How to perform Clean Boot” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Please ensure that the computer is set to start as usual by following the step 7 from the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

    Hi

I have a similar issue on an installation of XP Professional. After removing a program called 'Express Software Manager Client', I continually get the Installer popping up and trying to run and reinstall this program, which of course it cannot find.

I have downloaded the Windows Install Clean Up Utility, but am unable to install this because the Installer is already running and gives me an Error 1500 message. Can you assist please?

    Hi

I followed your setp A and found and deleted a program called SFR.  This seemed to solve the problem,  windows installer did not run, and the sidebar works fine.

I will admit I came across the Windows Install Clean Up solution before but 1) I'm paranoid about d/l off the internet 2) wasn't sure of what the program was called to delete.

So I did delete SFR and the problem seems to be solved.  No more ERROR 1706. The Sidebar still works fine.

Thank you for your guidence and help.

    Richard

I posted this question in the Windows Live Gallery.  So I will also post the solution there too.

    Hi!

I have Windows Vista, up to date with Windows Updates.  I have run as administrator sfc/scannow which declared there are no integrity violations.

I am not sure what the specific source of the problem is;  1) Windows Installer 2) Sidebar 3) uninstalled gadgets 4) Windows Update 5) unistalled programs.
