PPTP Error 628

I'm using windows 7 pro, trying to connect to a PPTP VPN, but I am getting an error 628 when I try to connect (it gets to 'registering your computer on the network' before the error message pops up).  The VPN is configured exactly the same as it is on my XP laptop..  the xp laptop connects fine, but win 7 gives the error.  Both are on the same wireless LAN.

I've tried disabling the Firewall on win 7, and even on the remote PPTP server (a comcast small business SMC router / cable modem) for a trial or two, but it doesn't help with the error from win 7.

Any ideas what I am missing?  Has the PPTP protocal in win 7 changed?

    Dear travisn000:

I have the same problem with you when I connect to my company vpn srv.(NT 4.0,PPTP) with my win7 laptop,

I solve the problem by select the data encryption type to "no" or "optional" other than default "require".

It works for me,good luck to you

    Thank you for that information.

Connecting without encryption is not really an acceptable solution due to the nature of the information that is transmitted over the vpn, but I will look into changing the encryption settings and see if I can find a workable solution.

Any luck with this? Facing the same problem and seem to have tried almost every connection option without luck.

I have verified user name and password, even set up new ones; it does not work with win7.

I tried rebooting to safe mode with networking.. this only allows for basic networking; all remote connection services are disabled and cannot be enabled (I tried manually starting them, but windows 7 refused saying it is not allowed in safe mode)

I tried connecting directly to the modem, bypassing the router; I still get the same error (..note that I can connect from behind the same router from any windows XP computer on the same LAN, just not from windows 7)

I contacted comcast small business support and they say I have the most recent firmware for the SMC modem / router / vpn server combo they provide...  just to clarify, the vpn connection works fine from within the same home LAN if I use XP; it is only windows 7 pro that cannot connect.

EDIT:  I also tried setting the MTU to 1200, 1000, and 500 before resetting it to its default value of 1500...  it still doesn't work!

    Any other ideas ???

    Hi travisn000,

Error code 628 means that “the port was disconnected”. You may refer to:

List of Error Codes that you may receive when you try to make a dial-up connection or a VPN connection in Windows Vista**http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923944**

Here are the following checklists recommended for setting up VPN:

    1. Make sure you logon using the correct username or password or try different username.

    2. Make sure the router is VPN pass through or GRE is enabled.

As part of troubleshooting, try these steps:

    1. Boot to safe mode with networking and check if you can establish the connection from there.

    Refer:

Start your computer in safe mode**http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode**

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)**http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode**

    2. If the computer is connected to a router, bypass the router to check if it works this way. Refer the router manual for the same.

    3. Upgrade the modem/router firmware. Please visit the manufacturer’s website for the update.

Considering there maybe some specific settings on the connection which is related to your VPN service provider, it is also recommended that you contact PublicVPN.com for support.

    PublicVPN.com support**http://www.publicvpn.com/support/index.php**
